Default Gearbox woes

Found chunks of crown wheel in the gearbox oil of the 914/6. Looks like the 3.2 was too much for the 901 gearbox. Guess I'll be upgrading to a 915 and maybe a LSD or Quaife. Still hope to do VIR.

That's bad news, Dirk. Hope you can find/fit a 915 in time for VIR. Does the shift linkage present a problem when moving to a 915?

Ah, the joys of overpowered 914's.
I have enjoyed 2 tranny failures.
Coming out of turn 3 at SP, felt a little bump and the engine rpms went up crazily. Hmmn, car jumped out of gear. Put my foot on the clutch but the clutch was on the floor.
The pinon lost 2 teeth and one became caught in the ring gear that locked the rear wheels (the little bump). This locked up the tranny and took out the main shaft, clutch, and flywheel beside the complete tranny rebuild.
Repair approached 3K. Maybe time to convert to 915!
At the time the only one making a tailpiece to convert a 915 to fit in car was Vellios. Tailshaft conversion was 1800-2000 plus the cost of obtaining a 915, rebuilding that tranny, new clutch, pressure plate, disc, etc. approached 9K. Decided I could repair/replace 901's every couple years for that kind of money.
Go to 914.com and do a search on this problem.
You may be hard pressed to convert to 915 and still make VIR.

9K! Bag the Teener and buy a 951! You guys are making it hard for us low $ folks to find good 901s any more. "Smoke em' if you got em"

Dirk, is the gear box down or did you just find frass on the drain plug magnet?

Dirk, Michael Bensing recently had a 915 for sale. It was posted on the Potomac site.

Still investigating. Can't make out the serial number on the chunk Kurt. At least it did not grenade, so there may still be some usefull pieces I can sell you. Have located a 915, now for a LSD or Quaife.. Much as I like the "real" track car, I think she is due an honourable lazy retirement with just occasional Saturday/Sunday afternoon drives in the West Virginia countryside.

Actually his “real track car” is any that can pass tech & has a CD player that won’t self destruct playing the national instrument of Ireland (bagpipes) at 110Db
