Default How difficult is replacing a Tripronic on a 2000 986 Boxster S??

Guards Red 2000 Boxster S on Ebay. Tiptronic is slipping. It's in Monrovia, Maryland.

Seller offered to sell for $3650.

Says the Tiptronic is gone, needs to be replaced. IMS not replaced. 115630 miles.

What would a replacement Tip cost and how difficult is the swap?

What about the other issues mentioned? Need advice from tech folk.

Anybody interested in a project? I'm at mschnittker@verizon.net - Mike in Sterling, VA

https://www.ebay.com/itm/28601160792...&segname=11051

"**NEEDS NEW AUTO TRANSMISSION** Does run and drive but transmission is slipping, would highly recommend trailing the car home. Replacement tiptronic 3.2 trans can be found as low as $1000 on eBay, great opportunity for a flipper or enthusiast to get into a boxster S for way under book ($8200). The 3.2 engine, boxster S brakes and 18 turbo twist wheels are worth well over $6000 by themselves, price is firm.

I’ve owned this car for about 6 months and was going to fix up but genuinely have just lost interest in the project. Strong engine, clean interior, needs some work. Below is a list of what I have found from my brief inspection of this vehicle

The good:

- runs and drives, registered, insured

- convertible top motors work great, goes up and down automatically, no issues.

- strong 3.2 engine

- Clean MD title in hand, no liens

- new drilled rotors/pads, almost no miles on tires, axles, battery, oil, spark plugs and tubes, air filters

- car cover

- original 18’ turbo twists, boxster S red calipers,

Needs

- Clean MAF sensor

- tiptronic transmission

- rear wheel bearings

- radio doesn’t work

- passenger seat power wire came loose from harness pin- needs repinned.

- bumper respray

- driver door lock cylinder has typical “spinning barrel”

Come see in Frederick MD 21704, inspections always recommended and welcome. Can do over the phone FaceTime inspection as well. As always, vehicle sold as-is."

Don't know about the tip', but $1k on eBay sounds pretty risky...

If he thinks it's worth $6k, but he's selling for 40% less, than he knows it is not worth $6k. 150k+ on a 25-year-old motor that 'runs strong' -- I would question that unless he's had it dyno'd recently. Chances are you could be looking at a motor refresh as well as the transmission replacement unless you only want to get it working a flip it.

X2, plus “owned for six months” says he bought to fix and/flip,and found out it was to expensive. Lots of older chick cars for sale cheap if you really want one.

Put eyeballs on the car. Bring ramps and a socket set. Put the car up on the ramps and smell the transmission fluid, is it burnt and when was it changed? The fluid may not have ever been replaced. Get the production date from the drivers door jam, early 2000 production = dual row IMSB. Don’t change it! Instead get an oil analysis from blackstone and a bore scope. You might get lucky. Lastly get the option codes from the sticker under the hood. Code 408 the wheels are worth more than the ask and finally two spray cans color matched to the paint code, front bumper cover is good as new

Ohh, I forgot bring 25 fresh newly printed hundred dollar bills, money talks

Get the serial number off the engine and see if it correlates with the body. Just because it's an early 2000 doesn't mean the engine wasn't replaced, e.g. with a Porsche crate engine that was built with whatever was current at the time like a single row IMS. Ask me how I know

A good clue is to look for cosmoline on the engine - no cosmoline indicates it was definitely replaced.

The early tips are pcs of crap IMO. Good luck finding a used one that works (maybe there are more donors out there now a days w. the engines failed.) Best you could do is find a VW shop guy that REALLY knows the guts of them and maybe rebuild.

Or just save yourself the headache and buy a different car.

What did you end up doing with that car?

Finish the rebuild or junk the project.

We couldn't find a suitable replacement or one we could trust w/ a rebuild. Listed in on Pelican IIRC. Sold to a guy in DE(?) who was a good friend of a VW mechanic who thought they could swap some parts from those to fix it.
