Default OIL CHANGE IN 911

Please pardon my ignorance, but is there a 'tried and true' method for changing the oil in my 911SC so I don't overill/starve my 3.0? I've been told that the true level of the oil is determined on the dip stick and to not rely on my gauge.. Also what brand is best? It currently has Castrol 20-50...should I change or continue to use it? I'm a novice Porsche owner, but been a big fan of these cars for many years. Can anyone help me or direct me to where I can get this info?

Thanks!

When I did it. I dumped the old oil (more on that later*) and filled up with 8-9 quarts. Then I started it up to circulate for a second and added one more. Then I let it idle for like 15 min to warm up and circulate through the car and checked the stick and added one last quart. I used Shell (see stickers in engine compartment) oil - 20W50 but I know some guys like Kendall, but IIRC, it's harder to find. Also, make sure you get the crush washers. I went to the dealer to get a filter and washers. I was at Arlington Porsche. If they try and charge you the full freight, make a fuss, Porsche corporate just jacked up the prices a whole lot and the manager there corrected them for me

*When I say I dumped it, I'm not kidding. The tank holds a lot of hot oil and it comes out REALLY REALLY fast. If you have one of those pans from Auto Zone with the tiny hole, cut it open now and save yourself the trouble of cleaning off the driveway or garage.

For more funny stories, do a search on Pelican, lots of good stuff.

Lastly, welcome to the board. Where are you located? Hope you can make it out to an event or an engine drop. Who knows, it could be yours.

VaSteve,

Thanks for the info! I would have surely dumped hot oil all over my garage as I do have a donut hole oil pan!

What do you mean by "crush washers"? How many will I need?

Two. One for the tank and one for the sump.

This is what you need for an oil change, I recommend using a Mahle oil filter:

Crush Rings:

One of the crush rings is for the drain plug on the sump plate:

and the other crush ring is for the drain plug on the oil tank:

You need to drain the oil from both places when changing the oil. If the drain plugs are on too tight, you may have to tap the wrench with a small hammer to break them loose.
I highly recommend buying the Bentley manual for the SC's and/or 101 Projects for Your 911, both are good resources.
