I will be looking at a car in two weeks from out of state and needed some help on what to look for if I bring it back to Maryland. I already plan on doing a PPI, but are there any big gotchas that won't get me passed the MD safety inspection? So far I have to check for:
Headlights Turn signals Brake lights Windshield wiper No cracks in windshield Has harnesses, but no seatbelt No passenger side mirror Oh, the car is a 1975. Thanks. |

Salazar, welcome to the board. I know of someone who can do a MD inspection on your car when you get it. Is it a 911? Where are you in MD? The main things to worry about are the safety issues, like brakes, tires, headlights, windshield wiper, horn, etc. The guy I know won't fail you for little things and he knows Porsches. With a car that old, you don't have to worry about the emissions stuff either,

Cars over 25 years old can be registered as Historic which does not require a inspection. I registered my 79 that way and it is giving me time to fix inspectable items on my time and budget frames.

I've gone the historic route as well, no inspection needed(At least a couple years ago when I registered my old SL). Strange how it works. I'm interested in the inspection place, I need to get my Carrera inspected asap.

Cost is the same. Tax the same. DMV the same (you gotta go at least twice to get the plates, they just can't seem to let you thru the first time.)
Last car I did was a VW Thing with district plates. No problem.

Yep, no safety inspection. Didnt really make sense to me either. I think the intention is to use Historic plates on show/limited use vehicles. I had them on my MG and the SL, no issues in everyday use. MD inspection can be a PITA, like the small crack in the headlight lense of the Carrera, not a safetly issue at all but I bet it will fail.

Parenn911,
I'm in Silver Spring, MD. I don't have the car yet, but will be going out of town to look at the car in 9 days (yes I'm counting) and have the intention of driving it home. I probably won't get historic tags only b/c I will want to drive it more than 2500 miles a year. The car is a 1975 911 and sounded really good over the phone and in pictures. Also, what do I use as tags to get the car home? Thanks for the inspection tip, I'll definitely use your guy. |
