I will not be able to make DE events this year but I want to learn more about getting started.
I have an 83SC Euro Cab. (Probably not the best for track, but it's what I have.) I know there are several different classes, but I don't know the specifics of each. My engine block is a 930/16 82US I believe it has the 9.3:1 pistons. I have Euro CIS and SSI's with single out exhaust. How do they determine what class this car would be in? So far the car is pretty much stock. I don't know the wheel widths but the rear tires are 225/50/16 and the front are 205/55/16 (Fukes) Would larger wheels push the car up into a higher group? What about brake system modifications? I plan on painting the car this spring and am beginning to collect some parts. I need a left front fender or extensive work on the bucket and the rear bottom edge which have rust. I won't know about the right Until I take it off. so far it looks pretty good. I have a line on a pair of front turbo fenders and rear fender extensions. Can anyone tell me what other parts I will need to widen the car? Front and rear side bumper valances? (Are these different for turbo?) Obviously I will need wider tires to make it look right and maybe fit larger calipers. Can I move my rear wheels to the front and just buy rear wheels same size or larger? Can I do this without widening? How do thes modifications raise my placement in the groups? I think DE requires a Roll bar, but I'm not sure what type. Do they make a removable rool bar just for track events. Is there one that will still allow my kids to sit in the back. I drive the car daily so some of the work I do will also just be done to extend the life of the car and make it better for the street. Lastly, this needs to be a budget project so cahanging everything over to lightweight is not really an option. BTW the turbo fenders are avalible because the guy that has them replaced his with lightweight stuff. So one man's junk is possibly my treasure. The timing on this is now because I'm going to paint the car. It only makes sence to do these things at the same time. I imagine the race rules get pretty technical is there a way to get a copy of them as well as the DE requirements. In advance can anyone give me som guidance? Thanks! Anyone got some heavy steel body parts they want to get rid of cheap?

Bill, I'd like to make sure I understand what you're interested in...is it DE or club racing? For DE the "classes" are Run Groups, where drivers of similar experience / skill level are grouped together. The car specs other than being a non-Cayenne Porsche are irrevelent. I have 1 day of DE track time + 3 days of HPDC (high performance driving clinic). I am most assuredly in the GREEN (rookie) run group. If you're not experienced, that's where you'll be, too. If you have zero track experience, you'll need to participate in a HPDC (either April or Sept/Oct?). Your cab will need a roll bar, but that's all that you'll need other than what's required to pass technical inspection. You can rent a helmet (from OG Racing) or buy one.
I hope this helps you... |

Thanks Jim, that a start, but as I plan to possibly modify my car, I would like to know what I would be getting into if I do go as far as entering a race. I'm assuming the body modifications are not really an issue, but larger wheels and brakes may be. At this point I don't think I would get above a stock group because I plan to comtinue to drive the car on the street. Any thing else I would probably want a dedicated track car and start with a coupe.
That's just my guess from my limited knowledge. If I'm going to keep the narrow body I want to know what's the biggest tires and rubber I cab squeese under the fenders. I've herd you can roll the fender lips to get more clerance and 8" wheels will fit up front with some camber settings and probably stiffer suspension. (I think the 8" wheels that fit are off a 944 ecause they have less of an offset than the 8" 911 Fukes. (Do I have this right?) If I go wider with turbo fenders will my rear wheels fit in the front?

If I understand correctly, you want to start track driving - DEs for now - but want to keep in mind various club regulations for wheel-to-wheel racing. Is that correct?
Personally, I wouldn't worry to much racing your cab, and in that respect modify away. My guess is that by the time you get good enough in DEs to move up to racing (several years away), you won't want to be racing a cab - you'll want a coupe. Or maybe you'll <gasp> sell your DE modified 911 for something like a 951 to race. I know that last bit sounds crazy, but I have heard rumors of people doing just that. Regarding the wheels - the biggest standard Fuchs you can put on your car are 930 16x9s with 245s in the rear and 951 16x8s with225 in the front. This is what I run and the just barely fit. If I lower the car, I'll have to roll the fenders in the front slightly. I'd only go with the turbo fenders if you need to run wider rubber than the 254/225 setup. Doing this, you can then run wider wheels with spacers (which I think may be a no-no for racing) or have some custom 3 pc Fuchs made up in whatever offset you want ($$$$$).

Chris,
I may race this car some time in the future, but that may be a long shot for the reasons you stated. But just in case I wanted to know what the regs are. I think based on your wheel tire combo, My rears are possibly the 16x8 but probably not the right offset. (I think they would stick out too far and hit the fender.) Chris, I'd like to see it sometime. I would want to stay away from turbo look if it will cause later problems with racing. Can anyone of you track guy's confirm this?

I'm not pro, but here is what the pca rulebook says.....
Stock Classes A thru K Euro-spec cars will automatically progress up one stock class. A. Removal or substitution of components, other than those specifically indicated below, is not allowed. B. Chassis/body, with the exception of bumpers and spoilers, must be the same material and configuration as supplied by the factory. Sheet metal modifications in the rear deck, trunk, and spare tire compartment as required for installation of a fuel cell are allowed. You can always run in the prepared classes, but you wont be competitive at all, and actually might be a little unsafe among the 'big boys'.

Go to the national PCA site & download a copy of the club race rules. You will find that upgrades to the suspension are allowed but not the engine. Something like no mods “after the air filter & before the exhaust port”. You are allowed to increase wheel sizes, DOT race tires, aftermarket shocks, anti-sway & torsion bars. Changes in the basic outward structure of the body will quickly bump you into a modified or even GT class. Since you are just starting out, fix your SC up the way you want, do all the DEs you can & when you are ready get a race car.

Or you could do what I did and end up in GT3-S with a lowly street legal '77 targa
