Default What shop would you...?

Puuuuuuuuurrrrrrrely hypothetically speaking....maybe

If you were to resurrect a non-runner that's the same age as you, and has been sitting for quite a while, into a dedicated track, but possibly still street-legal car,

what local shop would you use to:

do the engine rebuild?

put in a roll cage?

I think I can handle (learn a lot from) torsion bar suspension set up, possible brake rebuild, finishing stripping out the interior, installing race seats, fire suppression...and pretty much keeping it an ever-evolving work in progress.

Purely hypothetical...

...until its not.

...we'll see.

Discuss.

Roll cage - I am guessing you will hear Piper.

My car was done with that first, so more experienced folks can weigh in, but that is the slam-dunk referral I was given time and again.

Am I a moron, or is there no indication of their location on the website other than a 703 area code? Not listed in google maps either - seems verrrrrrryyyy Southern Maryland of them.

If you are serious, call them. Keeps the posers away. I used them back when they had a shop near Dulles airport (back in 2007 or so). I thought I heard they left that location but are still around doing good work.

Piper is out by Dulles (I think).

Motor rebuild depends on the motor. Assuming 6 cylinder Porsche motor from the 70s I would be picking between Intersport at IMA (If Ivan will be doing it or closely supervising). Next tier for me would be ASG or Chapman. and there is also the $pecial $hop out your way that specializes in classic Porsche restoration (name escapes me right now).

Agree with Piper for roll cage. Motor rebuild agree with Intersport, IVAN (only) at IMA, Billy at Performance Auto Works (at Summit Point Gasoline Alley) or (if he's willing) Dave Coleman out near Summit Point. Coleman is a master and trained Billy, but he only does what he wants to and is slowing down.

As for the rest, you can do it (with a lot of help from the Dorkis). Take a look at this thread.

They did the PPI on my 997...which then had a water pump bearing failure 2 months later. So I guess the lesson there is Ivan only - I spent a bunch of time on the phone with and got a great vibe from him otherwise...

Tif's in Naptown? I'm assuming, since I've never used them, but you can't have a shop in Annapolis and NOT be $$$$.

Thanks for the recommendations from all.

I would rather buy a built car from the guy that spent 3X the sale price than be that guy.

Unless you like and can do a lot of DIY paying to build a car is the expensive time consuming route

Plenty of DE builds out there.

....Please don't take that as don't bother to get an old Porsche and fix it up. By all means do so. This is related to a very focused segment of cars. One that it sounds like you are looking to build. Hopped up DE/sort of street build. You end up with a fun car for the track that is hard to sell for anything close to what you have in it. A competitive letter cla$$ race car is a good focus as it has a clientele to sell to so long as you follow a smart build formula. Even then you get hosed when you sell, or wad it up AKA "sell it to the tire wall".

DE "mutts"* are black holes of $ and not hard to find for sale.

*I use that word without malice. I have what is about the most built out DE mutt you will find. 2000lb wet with a 3.6L and little OEM left but the doors. PCA CR changed the GT rules 3/4 the way through my build and stranded it.
