Default Aircooled oil leak sources...

My 914-6 is leaving tell tale signs that oil doesn't always stay in the engine or oil tank. I used to take it as a badge of pride, but now I just find it annoying.

The engine was last "touched" about 1983. Stock 2.0l "t" spec engine. No additional coolers. However, I did start autocrossing it this year, which has been its only stressful / vigorous use since about 1991. At the last AX, as I was parking the car, I was told there was a small amount of oil left in the stop garage as I waited for the end cone to be moved and sure enough when I parked, more came out. Of note, I have not noticed a noticeable drop in oil level using the dipstick.

My thought is perhaps oil cooler seals or oil pressure sensor. Seems to drip from top to bottom and burn off on the heat exchangers, but sometimes it just runs along the bottom of the motor and onto the transmission case.

Any thoughts as to the sources?

mmm off season tasks!

Thanks!

Sounds like it is time to stuff a Corvette motor in there.

Clean the motor. Drive the car a bit. Inspect.

Hasn't been touched since 1983 and only marking its territory with a bit of oil? You are living a blessed life. Buy a complete engine gasket kit. You can replace what is easily accessible now, get to the rest, such as crank shaft seals when time permits and you can drop the engine.

Well, by "not touched since 1983", I meant that was the last time the engine was out for engine work (a mis shift caused an issue ) was then. It was pulled in '96 for a clutch replacement.. just regular maintenance since.

So, I was poking around in the top, back of the engine bay. Under the air cleaner housing.. These was a fair amount of an oily film. Not really sure what the items are though that I took pictures of... So, I've whipped them down to get them clean(er) and will check again once I have time to go out for a drive...

X2, pics do look like breather leakage.
But since you are poking around there are a couple of senders back there that are prone to weeping.... before they catastrophically fail!! Had one go bad at a CR some years ago. L took take the Carrera over and rinsed off the oil before the scruts came by to ask about the "smoking"
Also a couple of large breather hoses that could have deteriorated since the last century. Plus some vacuum hoses and the paper gasket under the oil separator cap....

Pretty sure a pic from PET will show you everything that is screwed in, bolted down or clamped....

Clean it first and all will be revealed

Post some pics of the car boy-o! But no selfies!!
