Default Switching from vintage registration to regular

Hi everyone,

This vintage registration is for the birds. I drove the car to work this morning and I got pulled over by a police man. He asked me was I on my way to display the car and I told him no I'm just going to work. Apparently that's illegal with vintage plates and he cited me.

If I switch back to regular registration would I need to have the car Maryland inspected?

Those are the guidelines in VA as well. I am going to get my landcruiser up and going and then swap to traditional registration.

In VA you can get vintage tags with for "general transportation purposes" which allows for daily use. When tagged for general transportation purposes, the vehicle must comply with all the safety and registration requirements.

Yes you will need to have it MSI and you will also have to have emissions done every two years.

"going to work" will get you in trouble in both MD and VA. However, old cars don't sit very well, so a long drive to get good and hot and blow out the cobwebs is essential.

Don't know if this would fly in MD but I have strong secondhand info that it can work in VA. Bonus: it's true.

IIRC, there was an allowance for using a Historic tagged car for commuting if your regular DD was in the shop. Or if you were otherwise taking the Historic car to a shop, maybe you could it drive it work first. But I guess proving the point could also be your undoing. I've heard about someone else getting ticketed for commuting, but because the cop saw them do it repeatedly.

But getting ticketed for driving it once is absurd. What if its a nice day, and you wanted to drive your historic drop-top instead of the minivan? IMHO, it may be worth fighting the ticket, just to make the point that occasionally driving should be allowed.

Not sure if converting back requires a new Inspection, but would put the car back into the VEIP rotation.

All you needed to tell him was you were dropping it off a shop on the way home. That's also on the what's allowed list.
We still have regular tags on the '71 and 356 but antique on the race car. In VA after 25 years you don't need emissions with regular tags. Just safety inspection which is pretty easy. Wanted to be able to "road test" race car w/o the yearly inspection is the only reason it has antique. Both 964s qualify now too. One was sold but I plan on keeping regular tags on L's track 964 for now.

i can’t answer your question, but if this was a one-time thing, then i’d argue the ticket.

From MD DMV:

A vehicle registered as historic cannot be used for general daily transportation, or primarily for the transportation of passengers or property on highways. It can only be used in exhibitions, club activities, parades, tours, occasional transportation and similar uses.

this means it is OK to drive it occasionally for transportation, but not as a general daily commuter vehicle.

you could explain to the judge that it was a one-time thing and that you need to run the car occasionally to keep it mechanically sound and operating. then show the judge information about your other vehicles. you can show evidence of the mileage you put on each of your vehicles, showing that significant miles are accruing on your other vehicles while minimal miles are accruing on this vehicle, thus demonstrating you are not using this one for daily transportation.

now, there were some changes to the law this year in Maryland, adding a new restriction that creates a bright-line rule against ever driving your vehicle as a transport to and from work. but that new restriction does not take effect until oct 1. when you were ticketed, the old law was in effect. if the old law had prohibited occasional use of the vehicle to drive to and from work, then the amendment would not have been necessary.

your cop jumped the gun on issuing the ticket, and totally screwed you. was probably unintentional, maybe he missed the part of the memo explaining when the new law kicked in.

bottom line: fight it. but don’t do it anymore.

88 carrera....If you received a ticket from an officer from the City of Rockville, I might be able to give you a hand/pointer for that matter.

Not saying you should lie about it....but IF you were actually going to drop off the car at a shop after work, or you had picked it up from the shop before work, is that still prohibited under the new law? If so, that seems a bit egregious.....even for Maryland.
