I am not sure when trying to replace my front 86 rotors, if I need to do more than take off the 5 bolts. The Shop manual suggests more and Waynes 101 covers the rear rotors. How tough is it to get them off ?
Thanks for any advise. I am planning to reattach calipers and perhaps replace front shocks tonight. |

George,
The front rotor replacement is a fairly straightforward job. You need to remove the front caliper (two 19MM bolts) and then remove the hub/rotor assembly from the axle. Be careful with the brakelines; don't let the caliper hang by just the brakeline. I used a coat hanger to make a "caliper hanger" so there was no pressure on the brake lines. Next, seperate the hub from the rotor; there are 5 bolts/nuts that need to be removed. I used a padded bench vice to hold the assembly while loosening the nuts. I then used a rubber mallet to seperate the hub from the rotor. I replaced the 5 nuts/bolts/washers with new hardware; but then I tend to be a little "over the top" when working on my 911's. Job can easily be done in a morning or afternoon, including the necessary beverage breaks. Hope this helps. Bruce |

Thanks Bruce.
The calipers are off. Do I need to follow shop manual suggestion and loosen lock nut from spindle and remove outer wheel or is it possible to remove 5 bolts and 'pop off' rotor while still on the car ? |

George,
When I replace rotors, I always remove the lock nut from the spindle and then slide the whole rotor/hub assembly off the axle spindle. This is a very easy process and it allows me to inspect my wheel bearings and races (I usually repack the hub with grease). Maybe someone else will jump in who has done the job by just removing the 5 nuts...sorry I can't help in that regard. Bruce |

Rotor update - was able to get the outer wheel dust cover off by using a 10 inch 2/4 piece of wood and tapping it with a hammer. Switched the rotors, and then had fun trying to get the brakes back.
I was worried that the powder coating had clogged the internal caliper channels as I had forgotten to remove the piston seals prior to having it powder coated. I had used my bicycle pump to get air into the chambers to blow out quite a bit of cooked rubber residue. Will be more carefull when and if I do the rear calipers. Once I got the brake fluid coming out of the bleeder nuts the brakes came back. I will flush the brake system soon. Very happy with the results. Thanks for the input. |
