Default Exhaust Painting

I picked up a Bursch exhaust system the other day for free. Its previous owner told me that it only spent a couple of months on the car, the outside looks a little rusty, but I was told that it was fine inside. Is there anything I can do to strip the rust off (someone was saying Naval Jelly) so it could be painted and made to look new again, or should I start looking at new exhaust systems?

Thanks,
~Eric

Eric,

Knock the heavy stuff off with some sand paper and clean with mineral spirits. There is really no way of keeping the bare metal from getting rusty again, espically if you knock off any galvinised coating w/ the sanding.

Use a good high temp (1000+ degree) exhaust paint from any decent auto parts store. The high temp stuff will cure/bake on when its heated. Best thing to do is plan on painting it right before you install it as uncured paint will come off on your hands, clothes, etc. If you do paint it, put it somewhere where you won't handle it until install time to minimize removing the uncured paint.

If you prefer the stainless steel look, Wurth makes a paint called Alu-Zinc (combination of aluminum and zinc). Heat resistant up to +914F.

Sprayed my Bursch with black satin BBQ paint. Somebody bring wieners Saturday and we'll have a cook out!

I thought my wife was asleep when I decided to cure the paint on my headers in the oven. She was, until the smell woke her up. Next time I will send it out to Jet Hot or a local powder paint shop.
