I'm thinking about mounting speakers under the dash of Lu's purple 73E. Vu (87turbolook911) made a good point of not wanting to mount speakers so that they are pointing at your feet. I'm reluctant to place speakers in the door panels. I'm thinking about making a pair of brackets that would mount under the dash and angle the speakers back towards the occupants. Does this make any sense or are there other good alternatives? Thanks!

Is that wherever you decide to mount the speakers, the front and rear of the speaker must be isolated from each other. Either with a baffle or box. If not, you will have little or no bass response.
If you don't want to alter any thing but get decent bass response, you could mount 6x9 speakers in small enclosures and place them behind each seat. You could add terminals so that you could remove them at anytime. Keep in mind this will only help you in the bass response area....you'll still have an imaging problem. Instead of people singing at your feet they'll be singing at you back. Vu

Jim--
I don't know how much legroom you're working with, but I'd be carefull with the under dash location. It might look like you've got plenty of clearance with a normal, static seating position, but people move their legs around even when seatbelted. What about the front roof corners? That might work if the speakeers aren't too deep. Or at each side mid-roof? My jeep has 2 in the roll-bar (facing down) just behind the front seats and the sound is good, but there are also 2 at the edges of the dash. I assume you've already got 2 in the rear shelf?

Interesting feedback. Thanks guys!
Dan, I don't have any speakers in the rear shelf. I don't know how this is going to end up but my hope is to not cut up anything that's visible in Lu's car. |

How about removing the original rear shelf, use it as a template and make a new rear shelf out of MDF. Carpet it and mount new speakers. This way, if you need to return the car to stock you can. Also you won't have to worry about having speakers below rear passengers seat.

Jim--
Knowing now that you don't have rear speakers, I think Vu's suggestion is the way to go.

If your serious about tunes, you gotta do the door speakers.. under the dash ain't gonna be worth the trouble.. and being serious will cost maybe $1,000.. I have crystal clear ear damage w/a front stage.. still needs some stage tweaking.. I had bell listen to it, and he's coaching......Ron
