yes, i have to agree with you guys that heading out into the hinterlands is the way to go w/ the 911. however, for some of us that live in downtown dc and cross the river into NOVA for errands - let me list a few strips you can usually find me ripping on.. (and no cops around, so far..)
1. entrance to the Lincoln Memorial from Constitution Ave. - then over the Memorial Bridge - and diving left into the carousel which puts you onto Rt110 as you pass the Pentagon. (exiting the carousel part of this leg is the best part!) 2. crossing the key bridge into VA, exiting to the right which puts you on the GW parkway- then quickly exiting to the left (Sprout Run) for a good uphill. speaking of the GW parkway, i think we can all agree that its a great ride - especially in the summertime w/ sunroof open or tops off for you cab and Targa folks.. but.. gotta watch for cops. Nonetheless, about 10 miles West on the P-way from the Key Bridge - there's a good long sweep to the right, which slightly banked.. - here you can push the throttle and it feels great. have never seen troopers on that stretch. 3. let's see, Great Falls off G-Town Pike (just West of the Beltway) has some awesome twisties. but you have to hit them late evening during the weedays to avoid traffic. i have a great route that is mainly comprised of Beach mill Rd, and a couple of others streets who's names do not come to mind at the moment. the one and major problem with these roads at night, though - DEER. and lots of them. 4. Rock Creek Parkway between Friendship Heights, MD and the Memorial Bridge can easily become a little raceway sometimes. 5. here's a good stretch, to/from the 14th street bridge and NY Avenue. I'm usually coming from Alexandria, hopping onto the HOV lane, then exiting on N. Capitol St. exit - which puts you into the tunnel for a good mile. the tunnel (of course, great for sound) is a runway. what sucks about this jaunt?? - you end up NY Avenue anyhow, these are some good runs that come to mind in the rat race, traffic areas - of which i find myself all too often... besides the usual beltway stretches, do you all have any particualar roadways you take advantage of in or near DC/Eastern NOVA??

Some short thrill rides:
* MacArthur Blvd from the District toward Glen Burnie. * Kirby Rd from Rt 123 (at Geo Wash Mem Pkwy) to Old Dominion. * Yes, Geogetown Pike between Swink's Mill and Old Dominion, but too much traffic.

When I'm bored I take Glebe road towards the chain bridge to 123. Sometimes I take neighborhood back roads to Kirby Road to 123. From 123 I take a left on Georgetown Pike. ***Make sure you don't turn too early into the CIA building, they WILL interregate you. Mabye it was just me and my olive tone skin and unshaven face Anyway take it all the way to Great Falls then a left on Old Dominion back to Glebe. And yes, watch out for deer. Its a good 20 mile decompression loop -Charlie

Keith,
I was following an old lady into the CIA building and she 'got it' as well. I explained to the officer that 'I just took a wrong turn". He asked me who the car belonged to, proceeded to run my license/plates, searched the car then sent me on my way 30 minutes later...looked to be a pretty standard prcatice, pretty nuts eh? but it IS the CIA building after all. BTW: he never took a look under the trunk carpeting into the smugglers box......what a fitting name -Charlie

There's a soccer field near one of the gates where lots of South American's congregate and play 'football'. When they get lost, and make a wrong turn into the CIA, they get the same treatment you did. The only problem is that many of them are illegal, and are shipped right off to the INS. Over a hundred a year I'm told. I keep a .357 in the car in my glove box, and make sure I have my conc. carry permit whenever I'm in the area, as they have the authority to pull you over outside the gates on city streets around the facilty if you do something suspicious. After the gunman open up on the innocents waiting at a street light there a few years ago its just FINE with me....it IS the CIA afterall, like you said. Keith

I have read the above posts and thought a bit abt them. I have lived in this NOVA area for 30 years and have traveled the mentioned roads numerous times and let me tell you that there is no such thing as "no cops" around inside the beltway guys.
Between Arlington, Alexandria, DC, Park, Fairfax, State Police, Local Sheriffs officers driving around, there are literally hundreds of ways to get a ticket "inside the beltway". Its really worth the drive out 66 to "no mans land" if you want to have some real fun. The odds are that inside the beltway you will get at the minimum a speeding ticket and maybe a reckless driving ticket. When I have that urge, I drive patiently to The Plains and go West. Knockwood that I have never gotten a back roads ticket and have hardly seen any LE. Don |

My post just reminded me of something:
Can I get some of your busines cards Dan? It would be "just in case" I did have an LE problem. I still remember the pizza party, it was great. My email is novaman4007@hotmail.com I can stop by to get the cards or you can call and give me the pertinent info and I will make my own card, thanks Cell No. 703 582 1119 |

Anyhow, be really careful around the Pentagon. I drive that area all the time and there are lots of troopers positioned there...mostly to check trucks (no trucks allowed). The GW parkway is a huge trap. A beautiful road, typically not much traffic outside of rush hour, very few exits and a 50 mph speed limit. G-town pike is a blast and usually pretty cop free. But I feel pretty safe when we travel in packs and hit the back roads of western VA.
