Default Removing rear seat backs

I am in the process of changing our 73E's interior color from brown to black and I had a question about removing the rear seat backs. They have a real big slotted head screw holding them in place on the outboard side of each seat. I used my largest flat bladed screwdriver to no avail. Is there some special trick to remove the rear seat backs or do I have to invest in a really big f'n screwdriver (and grow some muscles)? Thanks!

Jim:

FWIW, I have some really big f'n screw drivers if you ever need them in the future.

Default How did you do it?

Jim,
How did you finally get it out. I am going to take mine out next week and am thinking about ordering a drag link set from Sears for this job. Please let me know if there is a way to getting around using a drag link. Regards, ANdy

Andy, I just used a real large flat blade screwdriver. It took a little "grunt" but I managed to break loose the large screws that secure the outside ends of the seat backs. They probably hadn't been removed in 30 years.

Hehehe, thanks Dan! You're still having bad dreams about the old tie rods we pulled out of your car. No, there's no lock nuts.

Those screw-head bolts are notorious for being frozen - search Rennlist for a raft of horror stories.

The best trick to remove them is a $25 Husky impact driver - a cool tool to have in your shop. Its a 1/2" drive, hand-held whack with a hammer device. There is NO WAY mine were moving without this 'persuader' to get them loose.
