Default How to Fix Loose Ciggie Lighter Connection?

I plugged a car charger into the ciggie lighter in my Targa last weekend, and the plug was loose and would not stay connected (and it fits perfectly in our other cars). Anyone know if the lighter diameter was different in the '80s cars? Or, if there are parts that may get bent out of position but can be rebent? If not, has anyone tackled a lighter assembly replacement?

Thanks,

The guys on Pelican report that the lighter socket is bigger than standard cars. I bent the tangs out on the plug itself to make it fit better. Some have wrapped in electrical tape...depending on the plug.

I've seen used thin pieces of cardboard (ie match box covers) used to wedge in and hold items in place.

I thought someone made an insert. I think it's European vs. American lighter sizes. It's just a metal cylinder that shrinks the walls, but doesn't touch the positive connector at the bottom.

I wound up wedging the plug with folded paper last weekend, but it would be a PITA having to mess with it each time I need to plug in the charger. I imagine cardboard would have the same issue.

Electrical tape might work, but it will need to go inside the recepticle vs getting wrapped around the charger plug, as the plug needs to fit into 'normal' lighter sockets.

I've seen Dorkis with radar detectors in the '80s 911s -- you guys have similar problems?

I went with a (not surprisingly) more difficult solution and installed a dual aux power socket for this reason. Works much better and allows me to plug in all my crap for long trips (phone, mp3 player, gps, and 100% legal radar detector because I'm from MD).

You could replace the cigarette lighter with a std US sized one, but getting to that part of the dash is a bigger PITA than installing the aux port.

I was thinking about possibly trying something like this. Any links to the parts you used? Did you install below the dash?

Thanks!

(Edit -- found some at JC Whitney)

Don't you guys drive 911's? Can't you just get a hot chick in the passenger seat to hold onto it?
