Now that I have easy access to the firewall (engine is out of the car to replace the old 915 transmission with a Gary Fairbanks rebuilt one - thanks to Old Tee - story coming soon with photos) I want install the new Engine Compartment Sound Mat to replace the old one that disintegrated years ago.
Does anyone have any experience with getting the old adhesive off the firewall (including the a solvent that worked well) and a good adhesive for attaching the new mat - and where to get the stuff in the Gaithersburg area. Thanks.

How about acetone to remove the residue and 3m weather strip adhesive to apply the new sound pad?

I used sprey on adhesive remover. It may take several applications. You'll want to do it in a well ventilated area.

I was going to suggest WD40. Mostly likely you already have some sitting around anyway.

3M General Purpose Adhesive Remove. Make sure you have LOTS of ventilation (perhaps a fan blowing across and another fan blowing out of the garage). Also works for adhesive on rear seats. You can wet a cloth and hold it against it (easier for the engine compartment if the car is on a rotisserie...) for 2-3 minutes, and it will wipe off easier. If you leave it too long, it will take off some of the paint, too (10 minutes did it for me). They generally have this in stock at Strosniders, and I have some you could borrow (and I'm closer than either Strosniders, especially if me meet at NAPA around noon today).
Are you replacing with the Porsche part, or the reflective and lightweight mat from the guy who does the RS door panels, or something else?
