Default Opening up an oil filter

This came from an 01 boxster with less than 50K.
The filter looked like the new one as pictured. To open the filter the plastic end caps must be broken away
Then I cut through one fin (or fold) and stretched it out tacking it to a 2X4.
Here is what I found.

All these are steel flakes. There were numerous others that reflected in the light but too difficult to photo.

So we have the symptoms, but what was the overall diagnosis?
Aside from the chunks, it looks surprisingly clean.

There are some substantial chunks present, which suggest something may have come adrift in that engine. Not pretty.

I would be good to know what you find when you open it up, Matt.

Customer bought the car 18 months ago. Did an oil change then (4K ago). No symptoms or oil leaks. Did an oil change because of the time aspect and saw about 10 small (1mm od) pieces of hard rubber or plastic on the outside of the filter. Decided to open up the filter.

How do you check for an intermediate shaft failure?

What's your diagnosis? Just curios really. I'm thinking about my next DD and keep coming back to Chicksters.

The bearings love to go south and take the motor with them. Makes for a real ugly mess. No or almost no sound as the bearing fails until too late. i would be digging in considering the frass in the filter.

Could that be steel from cams or gears? Would bearings be softer metal?
