Default Replacing oil cooler o-rings

'85 911.

Prepping to fix an unknown oil leak at the front of the engine. Have all requisite parts - crankcase breather gasket, breather hoses (3), oil pressure switch, t-stat o-ring, and 3 oil cooler o-rings.

My question is does one need to remove the hard oil lines from the cooler to replace the o-rings, or is it possible to leave the lines attached and move the cooler out enough to get to the o-rings?

I would like to avoid removing the lines if possible to avoid destroying the oil cooler threads. I also do not have the large spanners for the oil lines.

Anybody care to loan me a set of oil line wrenches (when I get the answer I think I'm going to get)?

Waiting for a warm weekend to do my first partial drop,

Ludwig

The 3 oil cooler o-rings are for the engine mounted oil cooler, not the fender mounted one. There are no hard lines attached to the engine cooler - it gets oil directly from the engine itself. It does have a pass-through tube at the bottom to allow oil from the tank to get into the engine, but this is not a pressurized line so only attached with a hose clamp. Technically that line does not supply oil to the cooler, but rather directly to the engine.

For the fender mounted cooler, there are no o-rings to replace.

Default Thanks

Sounds like I need to peruse my shop manual a bit before I start asking too many questions. Yes the engine mounted cooler.

Default Nope - daily driver

I am waiting for a decent weather window so I can do this in my driveway. Planning partial engine drop. Should take 4 hours. Planning on at least 16 hours.

I'll try to take some photos. Maybe do some sound recording as well. I might be able to use them to prove "temporary insanity" in court after I burn the neighborhood down in a fit of rage. That or send it to a linguist to identify a new strain of terets.

Default Related question - engine cleaning

I was planning on cleaning the top of the engine while I was in there. I have a can of gunk I was thinking of using, but I am worried it may be too harsh for the block/intake/etc. Any thoughts?

I was planning on doing the clean prior to the work, but then I thought about working in a big, wet greasy mess and now I think I will clean it AFTER the work is complete, but before raising the engine. Not ideal, in my opinion, but better than working in the greasy puddle.

So from this I deduce, that in order to replace the o-seals between the oil cooler and the engine I should/need to do at least a partial engine drop? I have a substantial oil leak comming form this area dripping onto the x-over pipe cause lots of smoke.

Chris - Ludwig:

Search for the CIS removal oil leak thread I posted on here with pics (partial drop - changed all gaskets etc... you mentioned). Part of the reason I did it was to remove on-engine oil cooler and replace 3 o-rings. I had an oil leak coming from cooler down onto crossover pipe.

Finished it up to discover that it was my oil cooler that has failed. Created a cheap scap metal deflector shield so that drops hit shield and and then the ground until I could get a repro or known-good-used Behr OEM cooler.

Repro never showed (perf products) after several months. Just received known-good-used Behr cooler and will be re-doing partial drop to get er dun.

You don't have to drop motor/tranny completely to do this.

edit - thread here

Thanks. Just what I needed something else to do. The wife and kids are going to visit freinds next weekend in NC, now I know what I'm doing.
