Default How to borrow a tool

First, don't
Second, if you have to;
Always return ASAP when that task is done, not the end of the job
Always return the tool clean, complete, in the packaging that came with it
Always procure a new tool if you break the one you borrowed (promises don't count)
If you borrow a tool from someone who makes their living with them be VERY prompt returning it.

Can I add 2 more....

If you borrow a tool, don't loan it to somebody else without getting the original owners permission first...
If you borrow a tool, returning it with a little bit more is always a nice gesture...

Return it still warm from last use.

Add one more that has me stinging right now

. It is fully up the the borrower to remember to return it. Stumbling onto an empty slot in the tool box and then remembering where the tool went sure makes for bad feelings.

I have a tool out and for the life of me I can't remember who I lent it to. He can't seem to remember to bring it back ether so we are even in a way. (except for the tool that is)

When you either 1) loan a tool out or 2) someone owes you money, immediately write it on the whiteboard in the garage. Then you can't forget who to send the thugs after...

Funny. A friend's usual response when some one asks to borrow a tool is something like, "Sure, just as long as I can watch you use it. Pull your car into the driveway and make sure it's clean when you hand back it to me."

It is kind of hard to earn a living with it if the tool is not in my box!

Hey, I cleaned off the tool, remembered to put the transport shim on it, and returned it the very next day (although I was downtown from 8-4, and didn't get it returned until about 5 PM, but that was well before the time I was told it was needed).

What prompted this thread, OldTee?

I admit I am a tool borrower. But I always try to return it as fast as possible and with a six pack or something. But man if I ever broke anything I'd feel like such an ass and not only would I get a new one, I'd have to get a nicer one.
