Default Additional Details

I spent many months looking and researching to find a low-mileage Cabriolet, in particular a 1986 if at all possible. After looking at lots of cars, many with maintenance history and many without, I decided on paying a premium for this car given it’s condition and mileage. Yes it lacks a documented history but after owning and operating lots of cars through the years I felt like the condition of the car in it’s entirety outweighed the lack of paperwork. I was somewhat on the fence but after speaking with the car’s previous owner I felt reassured that during his tenure the car had been cared for as well as it appeared to have been. While searching I did come across cars where the owners kept everything down to the gas receipts – nice but low mileage cars usually didn’t reflect records or receipts for much on the repair side as they usually didn’t require it. I also did not believe that some of these cars reflected the condition that their seller’s claimed, records or not. I stayed away from cars with mods, right or wrong…I just did.

So..in the end the car really has been very trouble free. The front wheel bearings were both replaced when the right front started groaning just a tad. After reading up on it I saw that this is not unusual given the age and mileage for the car. The most vexing issue for me was a bad diode in the wiring harness that had my exterior lighting acting up. My mechanic did lots of trouble-shooting and found the bad diode..took three days! I kicked myself after looking at the Pelican forums later and seeing that this diode was an issue in the 1986 year. Who said even good mechanics know everything? That fact could have saved me a few hundred dollars in troubleshooting labor. Well..there’s a good one in there now!

As best I can tell I am the actual 3rd ”real” owner. I purchased the car on 4/16/2005 with 64,376 miles on the odometer.

Carfax at the time came up clean, no accidents, no odometer issues, no flood, etc. (I still have a copy)

Ownership/mileage on Carfax tracked with history as explained to me at the time of purchase by 2nd owner.

· Originally delivered to Scherz Porsche-Audi (Syracuse, NY) and sold to 1st owner on 9/26/1986 with a delivery inspection dated same

VIN#: WP0EB0913GS171240

Options as noted:

070 – tonneau cover (cab)
220 – locking differential
241 – short shifter
341 – central locking system
424 – automatic heat control
438 – comfort seat (right)
439 – special model (“Weissach”)
454 – auto speed control
C02 – catalytic converter

Other non-coded options :

Full leather interior
Premium carpet
Power top
16” wheels

· Car appears to have been dealer driven after deliver as the 1st stamp in the book shows an oil change at 1,413 miles on 6/17/1986, with a 2nd oil change and vehicle maintenance stamped for 8/7/1986 as well.
· No subsequent stamps completed in Warranty/Maintenance booklet from this point forward. No records passed along to 2nd owner.
· Original Owner’s Manual and Blaupunkt Monterey instructions and audio tape included in pristine condition
· 2nd owner purchased car in NJ and relocated to KY in 2001
· Prior to purchase I contacted 2nd owner who advised that he did his own maintenance in his shop. No “repairs” indicated, only routine maintenance performed as necessary.
· 2nd owner name and contact #’s provided upon request

Carfax shows owner change in October 2004, car traded in by 2nd owner to a premium used car dealer located in Shavertown, PA (Auto Works) where I purchased the vehicle from.

New top installed by Auto Works just prior to my purchasing the car. Explanation was the previous top was operated by a potential customer when the air temps were very low and the top was accidentally torn. No mention of the seals being replaced, and I assume them to be original. That said they are in good shape and the top does not leak a bit nor does one hear air leaking in at speed. Other than being washed, the car has only been wet twice since I owned it, once during a thunderstorm at a local car show and once on a skid-pad at a local PCA HPDE. No leakage at all…and if it didn’t at the skid-pad then it won’t!

Car has not been DE’d to my knowledge. I took it to a High Performance Driving Clinic at Summit Point in April 2006 where I was on the track for 4 runs of 20 minutes each under rather controlled conditions and with instructors in all vehicles on the track at the time. That said, it was blast and the car ran beautifully and received compliments from my instructor on it’s condition – both in appearance and it’s flawless operation (he actually drove it on 1 of the runs). The car more than held it’s own and clearly remains a formidably performing car even 20 years after manufacture. That said, if I were to “track” a car seriously I would get a coupe. This car is too nice to track and modifying it would break my heart.

Since I’ve owned the car:

Always garaged and protected from the elements.
Premium car cover purchased and used daily (4/2005 to present)
New engine sound pad installed (reflective) 7/2005
Oil and filter changed twice purchased using Mobil 1
Engine air filter replaced 7/2005
New Lloyd grey/beige premium mats (front & rear) with “Cabriolet” script in black
Front wheel bearings (left & right) replaced by Curry’s Auto Service on 2/8/2006
Headlight washer valves and bumper nuts replaced 3/2006
New drive belts installed by Curry’s Auto Service on 2/8/2006
Brake fluid flushed/bled using Racing Blue brake fluid 3/2006
Four new Sumitomo HTR Z (225/50WR16 & 205/55WR16) tires installed on 3/31/2006
New left front turn signal assembly installed and blown diode in wiring harness replaced on 5/31/2006

I have receipts for all items purchased for the car and all work done on the car since 4/2005.

Car has easily passed tough VA emissions inspection as well as annual safety inspection on 5/31/2006.

Items that come with the car:

Car cover (with cable and lock)
OEM Porsche leather bra (never used)
Interior tonneau cover (never used)
Boot cover for retracted roof
Cab window pillow (to minimize scratches on window when folded)
OEM air-pump
New brake hose (front and rear)
K&N air filter (purchased but never used)
Assorted fuses and bulbs
Guards Red touch-up paint

Car has never been in a wreck to my knowledge and shows no signs of repaired damage or respray/overspray. A clean Carfax done prior to my purchase (which I can forward upon request) shows no accident history. Body panels are smooth and line up as well as a 20 year old car can. Paint appears to be all original and a the few nicks and chips on the front of the car were nicely repaired with touch-up paint. Most nicks appear on the lower valence with a few on the hood. I get lots and lots of compliments on the condition of the car, both interior and exterior and some find it hard to believe the car has not been repainted. That said, the car doesn’t have many miles on it for it’s age and has been well cared for, so it’s condition doesn’t surprise me. I’d rate the paint as an 8/8.5 out of 10 – and I think I’m being kind of a tough grader.

The interior I would rate as:

Seats – Driver’s 8 out of 10 as the bolster area has some wear in the usual spot. Aside from the driver’s seat I would say 9.5 out of 10 on the passenger and rear seats.

Dash: 10/10

Carpet: Mats are new. Rest of the carpet – 9/10. They really are in nice shape.

Doors and other panels: 9.5/10 (only due to slight discoloring on the lock controls)

Other areas:

Engine: Runs and idles beautifully. No smoke of any color upon start-up - or otherwise. Not much else to say here other than I have not done a valve adjustment and am not certain when the last one was. While my mechanic did not think it was needed for a few more thousand miles I will likely either do it myself or have it done next spring if I still own the car. Then at least I would have a baseline. No sign of any valve guide issues but am aware that this can be an issue with some 3.2 motors. No sign or information passed along that the engine has ever been opened and the 2nd owner was not aware of any need to have had this done. No leaks and/or drips during normal operation. Over the winter when it is rarely driven a drop of oil or two have wound up on the garage floor. Given the nature of air-cooled 911s this seems to be somewhat typical. Didn’t/Don’t see a need to reseal the motor based on this alone.

Transmission: Shifts up and down as smoothly as a 915 can. Have had no issues or concerns with the transmission, synchros, clutch, or any part of the drive-train whatsoever. While I have driven 911s and 930s that were not nearly as smooth, and often read of my fellow Carrera owners discussing the 915 and it idiosyncrasies, I can confidently state no such issues exist with this car. I specifically have asked my mechanic and the HPDE driving instructor to assess the transmission and neither thought there was anything needed to be done to it at all.

Instruments and Controls: All instruments and controls are fully operational and original. Cruise control works smoothly, clock keeps great time, climate control, power windows and locks, etc. Radio works fine but speakers are not operating as well as they could (read: candidates for replacement if you need your tunes).

Top: As mentioned, the top is less than two years old, in perfect condition – to include the rear window. I use at specially designed “pillow” to cushion the rear window and prevent scratching when the top is down. The power mechanism works perfectly – every time. This is the first year of the power top in the 911 and having had cars with manual tops I can say that I’ll go with the power top every time. Perhaps not all would agree but not having to exit the car to take the top up/down is great.

Modifications: None! Contemplated a Steve Wong chip but never made the move. Purchased a K&N filter but after reading and digesting the various pros-cons I decided to stay with a paper filter. Car is bone stock.

Known Issues:

A/C blows cool. A check shows the system components all operate but a recharge would be necessary to have it blow cold (well, as cold as these units can be anyway)

Chin spoiler (front “smiley”) partially ripped on one small spot. Have secured it with adhesive but if you look closely it is visible. Only solution is a replacement ($300-$400 new). Have long kept my eye out for a good used one but they are snapped up fast and actually are rather expensive if in good condition.

Dings: One on the passenger side rear wheel well. Self-inflicted two weeks ago by being totally consumed in cleaning out my garage and having the shop vac run into the car accidentally. Even though the car cover prevented the paint from chipping it did result in a small ding (I remain sick about it). I will use a paintless dent removal guy the has flawlessly taken the two dings out that came with the car. He comes to the house but is booked and can’t get here for another week. No scratches, dents…and absolutely no rust at all.

PPI:

I have not had a PPI done on the car although it was checked over by Curry’s during it’s initial visit with them in February 2006. I did consider a PPI prior to selling but realizing that a potential buyer may not like relying on mine and would want there own. I have no reason to suspect a PPI would bring to light any issue at all with the car and will work with a serious buyer to have one done at the buyer’s expense. Should a PPI find anything at all out of order I would be surprised but also most willing to work with a buyer to address it.

PPI Candidate locations:

Currys’ Auto Service, Inc., 4003 A Westfax Drive, Chantilly, VA 20151 (703-502-0400): Curry’s is the family owned and operated indie that I use to maintain my BMW and Porsche when I find myself in over my head. They work on high-line cars but one will occasionally see a minivan or such there. There are four locations in the Northern Virginia area but I have come to rely on the Chantilly location due to Tim, the manager there, and the excellent work they do at reasonable rates. They are also kind to me when I bring them my car along with the parts I purchased on my own for expert installation. With the help of many Pelicans I am fine taking on minor jobs but don’t hesitate to take my vehicles to Tim if I don’t have to tools, lift, expertise etc. It doesn’t hurt that they give PCA members a nice discount! You can find them at : http://www.currysauto.com/

Curry’s supports the local PCA chapter and does tech inspections and PPIs. I don’t know if they hold a Porsche certification or not.

Other potential PPI locations:

HBL of Tysons Corner: Porsche/Audi/Mercedes Dealer (closest Porsche dealer to me). Can be found at: http://www.hbloftysons.com/

For warranty work I take my M-B there and know the service manager…not necessarily a good thing I know. It’s one thing to know a service manager when your cars are 15-20 years old…but new? Not sure how they do on Porsche’s but as soon as my C240 is out of warranty it will be going to Curry’s.

Intersport: 1524 Springhill Road, Unit H, S, McLean, VA 22102. (703-242-8680)

Used them years ago for my 1986 911 Targa and they did very nice work. They are a bit distant from my current residence though.

Autobahn Service Inc.: 3158 A Spring Street, Fairfax, VA 22031 (703-691-1771). Can also be found at: autobahnserviceinc.com

Have heard good things about them and they specialize in P-cars.

Others:

IMA Motorsport: 2928 C Prosperity Avenue, Fairfax, VA 22031 (703-849-9590).

Porsche of Arlington: 3100 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington, VA 22202 (703-684-6660) Also found at: http://www.porscheofarlington.com

Why not continue with your relationship at HBL when your c240 warranty is over. I've had Bill Shaw as one of my clients on several of his Mercedes both in & out of warranty and last time I checked he was still Curry's customer relations manager.
Here's your free bump!

Default Good Question..

Thanks for the bump! While the general service manager (Dave) at HBL is a super guy and will address things as needed, the rates are high and the customer service from the line service folks is not up to par for this dealership. The mechanics (IMHO) are average. I deal with it because it doesn't cost me anything under warranty. Curry's gives me great customer service, decent labor and parts prices (and a discount) and the car never seems to spend more time in the shop than absolutely necessary.

I haven't ever really heard many enthusiasts urging anyone to head to a dealership for repair/maintenance work. Perhaps HBL is better than I think, I can only speak from my experience though.
