Default SP Main lap times...

I was flipping through the latest SCCA magazine and it listed a recent event at SP main back in may. In the list they posted either a) qualifying time or b) fastest lap time (I'm not sure which).

IIRC, my times in the SC before the repave were in the 1:31 range. I thought that was ok.

Then I saw the time for the top Formula Vee guys (and IIRC, these single seat, open wheelers, have a 1.2L VW motor with maybe 50-60hp - can someone let me know if this is still true?, and weigh maybe 900lbs) and the top times were... yup.. 1:25.6 Admittedly, this may not be a "run of the mill" Formula Vee (it seems some folks "overspend" for this class ) but I was suprised at the times. You can find FV cars in the $5-8K range with top ones running about $11-15K it seems.

The Spec Racer Ford (105hp, 1650ish lbs) of which my brother used to run and I've admired for some reasons, were running about 1:24. These cars are $15-18K used.

The Formula Fords were running 1:10s-1:15s depending on engine.

Not sure what I am getting at, but man, those all seemed like pretty cool ways to have some fun at the track and maybe if I can find a "widebody" version I'd love to try one on someday.

So.. what are folks lap times at SP main these days?

Your car is running 1:27s at Summit now, I know that much . Before the repave in my car my best time was in the high 27s. That was pushing it. After I was in the high 26s. So I gained about 1s. I heard of other guys getting 2-2.5s immediately after the repave.

Those times were with the 3.2. Right after I put the 3.6 in the car I got into low 1:25s. I have since forgotten how to drive and haven't seen anything lower than a mid 1:26 since.

We (me and my stu) were on our way to a sub 1:29 but the tow truck took ~10 mins to catch up to us soooo.... the final elapse time was a lot more

I ran a 1:21.3 on Toyo R888s a week after the original repave (track was like glue!). Since then I run mid 1:21s to low 1:22 with a best of 1:21.003 on Hoosiers. Still searching for that elusive 1:19/1:20

There are a lot of cheaper ways to go faster around the track than in a Porsche. Just a matter of what you like.

You can get a Porsche down below 1:15 at Summit, but it will cost more than most houses.

I did a 1:26.2 or something at the Club Race last year. That is my best.

Ryan, I'm glad you were finally able to take a little break from slaving over your house work and get back in doing DEs.

Totally agree with Mike. Porsche is not the best choice if you wanna go fast and not spend "a lot."

I did 1:24.9 with my friend's used hoosiers last April in my 964 C2 at around 3050lbs. since it was my very first day using hohos, and i'm about 150lbs overweight for H class, I'm hoping to go lower in oct CR.

I think cheapest is still spec miata. About $10-12K for the whole thing; the top 7-8 people in qualifying do in the range of 1:27-1:28.

Spec Racer Ford is a blast! Everyone is on a level playing field with spec tires, spec engines, etc. 20 lap races with cars nose to tail and side by side at 10/10ths can't be topped by any DE experience. It's all about driver skill.

All this for $15-$19k for a ready to race car. Engine rebuild is $4k-ish. Tranny is $1.5k-ish. Both can last about 4-5 years before needing refreshing. Dry tires stick like glue (hoho's slide in comparison ) and are $175 a corner. The wets stick like glue too! Bodywork is fiberglass.

The best part is you can rent a racecar for your SCCA schools to see if you check it all out. See Hagerman RacEngineering (www.hrace.com) for details.

If only I could figure out where to add the $$$ to reduce my lap times!
