PSA - don't forget to support our local vendors and suppliers.

Now for something completely different

Default Something a little more serious

As part of my DE/racing support gear I bought a Shock Doctor unite. SD uses ozone to defunk helmets, gloves, suites and more. Ozone is is also recommended to clean CPAP machines, hoses and masks. Which because of my sleep apnea I use a CPAP rig every night. So I’ve been repurposing my SD to clean my CPAP gear too.

Fast forward to the current emergency and I find:
“Ozone gas has been proven to kill the SARS coronavirus and since the structure of the new 2019-nCoV coronavirus is almost identical to that of the SARS coronavirus, it is relatively safe to say that it will also work on the new coronavirus though it must be noted that there is no studies to date except one that is current ongoing n China at the Institute of Virology In Hubei with regards to this. Progress of that study has shown that it works and the study should be concluded by the end of this week and officially published in the journal Virology”

So now I’m going to use the SD to extend the life of the few masks, cloves and other gear I have.

And I know ozone gas is a carcinogen and bad for the ecology.

Ground level O3 is not bad for the planet. O3 decomposes back into O2 or combines quickly
It leaves no residual other than the results of combining. It has been used for many years to kill virus, bacteria, mold and fungus. I have watched it eat through a car that was covered in fine white fuzz. It sat for a couple months with wet carpets and it was a hot mess. The O3 disintegrated the stuff. Was intending on making the car safe to clean and it surpassed expectations.
I have a 120 volt corona discharge type (fitting name no?) ozone generator. For this event I use it to clean the car and purchases. After shopping I place it in the car leaving everything other than frozen food in the car. Give it a couple hours then open the hatch and a door for a couple min. Done. No muss no fuss no missed contact point missed. You can smell ozone in very low concentrations. If you can’t smell it you are not being exposed. A walk in a forest exposes you to epa excess levels of ozone. It is that faint electric / fresh air smell.
Be careful of the units. They need to be able to make lots of O3. It dissipates quickly and you need to generate it at a rate that produces the proper concentrations. Many do not have the power to disinfect a car or room.
O3 eats stink too. Someone smoke, the carpets get wet or a mouse go tits up in your car? An hour or so and some of that with the HVAC running and gone.

The SDs have a heat option too. Which I only used in the summer months to quickly dry helmets, gloves etc. between runs We’ve also used the Shock Doctor to freshen old books and other items in storage to long. Actually quite handy for a number of things.
