That VA Tire & Auto doesn't seem to want my money. They won't mount tires on loose wheels, they refused to do an alignment on my 944 over the summer, and when I went there today, they said they also won't mount customer-supplied tires, either, so I didn't bother asking if they could fix the leak.

They did align the BMW a few years back but tacked on another 30% because it was a "precision alignment" (even though other shops have been able to properly align the car with their "standard alignment" process).

This would not be something that would fail catastrophically. Air would leak out slowly if there was an issue. A catastrophic failure would only happen if the air went down and driving continued. And it's been driven for quite a while with this nail in it, whci would be more likely to result in a spectacular failure than a plug.

BTW, do you know if the nail even goes all the way through?
The nail does go through. When I pulled it out for the second picture, I heard air escaping.

Good to know there is no catastrophic failure. In that case, I'll try the plug, first, and keep an eye out for leaks.

Thanks!

BB.

I've plugged a couple as close as that one on street car tires. Lots of glue and cut it flush with the tread. I also light the glue and let it burn a little while so the plug and the tire rubber melt together. Have never had an issue and tires have lasted until the tread is down to the wear bars for replacement

I had a nail in about that spot a few years ago. Took it to Merchant’s who wouldn’t touch it, but would have happily sold me four new tires. Went a mile up the road to one of the many Llantas Usadas places on 28 just south of Centreville. The guy there patched it for ten bucks. No issues for the remainder of the life of the tire.

Methinks you need to find another tire shop.

Indeed. I've actually given up on going there but decided to try again because I do feel like they have better workers compared to the other local shops. But, at this point, they clearly don't want my money!

Sure they do. They want $1,000 from you, not $10.

VTA seems to have changed I noticed. I had the 930 inspected there twice and once brought a rear for a plug. That was about 2 years ago. I guess you tried to Merchants on Potomac View?

Well, I'm not going to give them that much for mounting a few tires!

I had back luck with them about 15 years ago so I stopped going. Now that they're NTB, I gave them another shot last summer and they were the ones that aligned my 944. I'd have gone straight to them but, honestly, I completely forgot about them until after the fact.
