My wife and I stopped at a distillery in Edinburgh to do a tasting, and either we weren’t at a good one, or scotch just isn’t for me, but it was not, uh, pleasant...

We plan to go back so I could use some recommendations on a proper place to go.

I dunno Laddie, Air Traffic always understood me perfectly when I was flying spraying right beside runways at Dulles and BWI A BA pilot was worried I might be a conflict until I told him he better have spray booms on if he was this low.

No, that pretty much is how Scotch is...

Some can be very smokey, and some can taste like soil.. One must develop a taste for it. And many do not/ cannot. I'm kind of in the middle -- I can sip it and appreciate the flavors on one vs another, but it is not my liquor of choice. And as someone who never smoked, getting a taste of a really smokey whiskey can be a bit overwhelming.

^ You had me at 'very smokey, and some can taste like soil'. The best are both

Soil = Peat. There are some that require you to chew. Love that stuff.

M, I am sure she does!! Scotches are not difficult, West Coast Ilsay, Laphroaig, Lagavulin etc, from the west coast tend to be peaty(creosote) Highlands and east Coast are smoother. There is a whole bunch of BS going on with the "posers" extolling the virtues of the peatier creosoter the better with their cigars. I enjoy the occasional west coat pettier single malts, but mostly prefer the smoother Spey and highland ones.. Not many I have not consumed of either and enjoyed all.
