For the whole house setup, one of the best bangs for the bucks is the generac 20kw with the nexus smart switch. I've installed 2 for clients in my neighborhood. Each has two a/c systems. (Sometimes you need to add a soft start kit) One even has the jacuzzi as a requirement! Generators direct is probably the best source. The usually have them in stock and if not will in a few days. Shipping is really easy. It's really nice if the gas meter and the electric service is close to each other. Both houses had 2 services and thus two main panels. We simply powered one of the two panels and moved the circuits we wanted to the one that was fed by the generator. Sometimes its easier to install the transfer switch outside and sometimes inside. They are rated as services switches. One thing you must check is your meter size. Often you must get a bigger meter. Sometimes the service from the street is too small or low pressure. I scoped out a third for someone who already had propane for heat. Great idea because they already had a decent sized underground tank. Plumbing was going to be the expensive part. One thing to not forget about is fuel cost.... These things burn a lot of gas. I assume propane is still way more expensive than nat gas. That being said, I have a portable 8500 w gasoline gen set which is connected to an inlet plug in my detached shop. As Jazz mentioned, I would not advise this setup as it required me to be careful to throw the main off first. I have about $2800 invested but can run almost anything in the house I want individually, but I must manage what I use. Worst case is that the breaker on the gen will trip it its overloaded. Unfortunately for me I'm all electric. So I can get hot water, but no heat. I can run the fan on the heatpump and circulate heat from the fireplaces! We have an older commercial building that had a small air cooled generator for the emergency lights/exit signs. It was locate in the basement of the building and run on propane. The exhaust was piped outside thru a large muffler. It was actually pretty quiet.
