I was quoted $4,000 to rebuild a lowly 944 transmission. Lots of labor. So $8,000 for a 996 might be close.

Maybe find a salvage? OklahomaForeign? Vertex?

So how did this work out. All good? Just a synchro and no trans swap?

Mind sharing what that ended up costing for us 996 owners.

I ended up going with www.IMAmotorsport.net , they were the only ones to actually return my initial call with a quote. It's funny, their shop looks 10x's better than their website. lol

Turns out the syncro ring was the main problem in the transmission, but the wheel bearing sound I heard was actually from the wheel bearing which they repaired.

They also took my vehicle to the local upolstery shop to replace my Cab top because the glue holding the plastic window in place decided to give way last Summer

I've compaired the invoice to the parts on vertex transmission page and it seems to have everything listed. The price is the same as Vertex's plus install. Driving back to PG from IMA (~5pm) was a decent test of the tranny so far. I can't imagine having a problem in the future. The warranty on the porsche parts is 2 years, however my invoice indicates there's a 12 month/12k mile warranty on the labor and parts. Overall, I'm very pleased with the work.

The new hardtop turned out better than expected. Gahh used to or still may have a replacement top for 996's that has a window which is/was more rectanglular and narrower than the stock top. I was pleasantly surprised to see basically a Porsche 996 stock looking Cab replacement outfitted on my 996 with color matched (black) stitching instead of the factory glued in plastic window. I was really not looking forward to having that funny looking rectangular narrow window.

Like Eddie Murphy would say, "there's nothing like a happy ending with a tranny"

Any questions before I take a spin?

FWIW, while I've bought a boatload of brake pads and other parts from Vertex I've never heard stellar reviews on their rebuilding of anything. Rebuild means different things to different people and I think having a good local wrench do it is a better way to go.

I tried to list everything on the invoice however, I suppose I took too long for the Dorki site so when I hit the submit button it asked me to log in again. When I did, all that I typed dissapeared. So to basically, to answer your question, No trans swap, just synchro and the bearings on 1 and 2nd. Parts $2600, labor $1700 for the tranny job.

Rear right wheel bearing replacement was $700

Cab replacement was $1600.

I never shopped around for the wheel bearing so I'm not sure if that's a good price but the tranny work was about the same as sending the core to Vertex and them shipping me their rebuilt tranny from their inventory including shipping. The price of the cabrio was shopped around by me and a few other cab owners from Rennlist in the DC area last year. LIM's Custom Top Upolstery(near IMA) matched the best price we found locally from a shop in Montgomery County.

IMA or Intersport?

We used them to replace the Boxster rear plastic window.

IMA.

The cheapest for the window only replacement for the 996 last year was $400 at LIM's. I think Programmatore PM'd me that, IIRC last year.

Lim's and Intersport are both on Tyco Rd, in Tyson's Corner. IMA is close to Dulles Airport.

Unless Lim's has a 2nd store I'm unaware of......

I live in MD.. I know nothing about VA except getting to DCA and heading out of town through VA via 95/85. Also I don't know where Intersport is. Shit, I don't even know where LIM's is located. Everything in VA is close to everything else in VA to me. I never took the car to LIM's, IMA did, all I did was drive to IMA to pick up my completed car.
