Funny story. I grew up in a fairly rural town. Our garage - like the workshop above - was detached from the house. We never had a problem with mice until our neighbors moved away and took their cats with them.
We thought the cats just liked the warm, dry space (and occasionally warm car). Turns out that was their happy hunting ground. If you don't want to get traps, I can recommend getting a "garage cat" or two.
