Default HMS in car communicator

When I sold the race car, I recommended the new owner who is in the instructed group to buy a HMS communicators because chatterbox will be useless in the car. He wants to buy one, and Carolyn and I have also decided to buy these for ourselves, as well.

So, I plan to call HMS and ask if they offer discount on multi unit purchase. Let me know if you want one.

Please be ware that I do not have time to spend days haggling with HMS on group buy pricing and then getting commitments, so please do not express interest unless you plan to buy one at the price offered.

BTW, I think Bikepump has one and is happy with it.

I’m definitely interested. Dan D. mentioned something about getting a group discount on these as well. Maybe check to see if there is a discount already in place?

Nader- how is volume with this set? I thought I had heard that it may not be quite loud enough?

I don't usually wear my communicator while "driving" my own car. But to answer the more serious question, about a foot before the braking zone for turn 1.

Been using the TracCom gear since late 2017 season.

The good:
Super clear audio, some students have actually commented about the clarity.
Proximity mics, minimal outside noise.
Separate volume controls for instructor/student
Uses 9-volt batteries, used two this season with second battery still good (12 events)
Easy to install in-helmet kit (recommend for instructors)
IMSA plug so you can use earbuds vs the in-helmet kit
More durable (than Chattershit) cords connectors

The bad (sort of....)
Max volume has been described as an issue, though its been more of an occasional nuisance not a full time issue. I've experienced this with two scenarios, when student does have the mic in front of their mouth, and when going above about 100 mph in a car with interior buffeting.
The battery connector wires aren't hardy (like 18 ga) and soldered to the underside of the board which cannot be removed. When mine broke because I removed the battery after each event, easy fix as I soldered it to the top side of the board which significantly lightens the bending load on the wires.
As 9-volts don't tend to leak, I don't remove the batteries now.

I'll be all the Potomac events for anyone who wants to borrow my setup to try it out.

Summarizing, I'd buy it again

Nader - they were very accommodating when I coordinated the initial group buy. Talk to Colin Runkel <Collin@hmsmotorsport.com>

Good information.

For reference, I put a $$$ in car communicator in the 993. There were still times that hearing was difficult. I am not looking for perfection, just better.

Between Carolyn and I, we have 4-5 chatterboxes. I treat them as disposable.
