Default It is about time... the fun begins

Soooo... way back in 1985 when I was a much younger fellow I was lucky enough to find a 1977 Carrera 3.0 Targa and become the owner. It had been recently grey market imported by a guy who had it for six months and was ready to move on to something else exotic. I guess I am technically the third owner since the first owner was a doctor in West Germany. The 911 was in good condition and for the next 33 years I really did not do anything to the body or components except for regular maintenance and an engine and transmission rebuild. Still a numbers matching engine and trans.

Now in 2018 it is about time to refresh the 911 and take it back to close to original condition. I will try to channel my inner rothaus and notton but do not keep your hopes up. My goal is to completely strip all parts off down to just a tub, send it out for paint and any bodywork needed, then put it all back together with cleaned and plated/painted parts, new seals, etc. Sounds pretty simple to me.

The first step begins with an engine drop with the help of Dorkis Tito, Mike, Scott, and John. A Motley crew....

Tranny is separated, engine is placed on a stand for hibernation this winter/spring while I dissemble the rest of the 911 to get it to the paint/body shop.

one small recommendation...for any bolt where the end sticks past the nut, use the Kroll and wire brush as best you can...will help keep from snapping bolts and having the replace when a good cleaning would have been enough to keep the orig hardware...have learned that lesson a few times when my patience gets the best of me as I have pulled off fenders and heater boxes and lights etc...

Fast forward 18 months. For sale 77 Tub with most parts.

Just kidding, sounds like an ambitious project. Good luck.

Chris, it is ambitious but it will be done. I have torn apart a few VW busses to the bones in my day and done Subaru engine swaps in them. This will be done..... I hope 2 years is realistic.... 🙀

Dave, good luck. I just spent a year doing the same thing to my 74. It is fun to start and a great relief to have it back together and driving. I have some fuel line, Door panel weather seals and a few other items left over. Maybe I can come up give you a had and see if you can use some of the stuff.

Thanks for all the well wishes. This is intimidating now but I am trying to eat the whale one bite at a time. I'd love some help anytime. My plan is to work on this Friday afternoons and some each Sat/Sun. If you want to join me just send a PM.

Friday I cleaned out the frunk some. Was very glad to see a clean battery area, once I wiped it down. Not bad for 41 years...
