I'm guessing you changed the mounting to a remote mount in order to lower the operating temperature, correct?

Sometimes (or often) it is not the operating temperature but a current spike such as inrush current that damages these. You would need to look at the overall circuit design, but a small series resistor could be helpful in one of the source/drain legs. A fuse could also be used which would still blow but might be easier to replace.

Gloves, sweats, and a warm hat are cheaper and need less maintenance.

Not really. Remote mount is for convenience in replacing the transistor. Instead of having to pull the board, unbolt all the other transistors from the heat sink, desolder, etc., all I have to do is unbolt the one screw holding the transistor in, pull it from the sockets, install a new one, and rebolt.

Yeah there's a design flaw in the circuit. But I have 10 spares, it blows a transistor once every 2 years, so I think I'm good for the next 20 years.
