I'm guessing you changed the mounting to a remote mount in order to lower the operating temperature, correct?
Sometimes (or often) it is not the operating temperature but a current spike such as inrush current that damages these. You would need to look at the overall circuit design, but a small series resistor could be helpful in one of the source/drain legs. A fuse could also be used which would still blow but might be easier to replace.
