Sewage leak question
So a few weeks ago at my Dads house he had a cracked 3” cast iron pipe which led to some black water leakage in the furnace room. I found the water, cleaned it all up, removed everything from the furnace room, and fixed the pipe. About a week later the wood flooring in the adjacent space started buckling. Long story short, I have pulled it all up and pulled up all subfloor that was wet. Ripped out drywall etc. I feel as if I have removed everything that got wet and it has been drying for a few weeks now.
My question. Is there something I should put on the effected areas (insurance guy kept saying anti microbial) prior to putting it all back together. I have done some research and while I don’t want to minimize the potential concern there wasn’t that much water and it was not really sewage, but still the water would have had sewage in it I guess. I was thinking to paint it all with kilz, but wanted to get some advice prior to doing that...thanks for the help. Tito

bleach... Spray it all down with a diluted bleach mix.
Not sure how you determined "not really sewage". Lots of stuff going on inside those pipes...

I know Dave. I guess I meant there wasn’t brown shit all over the place. You are correct though and I suppose that is why I am asking.. smile.
Just spray with diluted bleach and water and leave it to dry? What is a good proportion of bleach to water?

Probably best to consult the instructions on the bottle of bleach. Whatever works for disinfecting toilets, etc. will be fine. Spay and leave to dry is the easiest.

Likely overkill for a brief exposure to water, but .... After the bleach has thoroughly dried, if you have any concerns that any of the exposed wood may rot, you can treat it with a mixture of boric acid and ethylene glycol (antifreeze). (See https://acbs-bslol.com/restoration/s...nt/d97woodrot/ for example.). Antifreeze is, of course, poisonous so I would not use this anywhere a pet might chew on the wood.

Is four weeks of drying enough to get all the way into a 2x4 piece of framing?

"All the way"? Only way to tell is with a moisture meter (and there is an ambient moisture content anyway, so it will never be fully 'dry'.
But 4 weeks should be more than enough for bulk water to dry, especially is a fan was directed at it early on.

That would be best checked with a moisture meter. You can also tape some clear plastic over a section of the wood and wait a day or two. If condensation forms you are not ready yet. Air flow speeds drying greatly. A couple cheap box fans and a dehumidifier if the space is not air conditioned well works wonders.
Use less chlorine than you think. Most people WAY over do it. A garden or hand sprayer works great. Ozone generator is the best by far if you have access to one that is powerful enough. No residual or missed / hidden areas.

Be careful with fans, capt obvious here, make sure you treat all the mold before spreading it.
