Also, if the prior seller was in Virginia, and the title gets signed off in 2027 as though the new buyer just purchased it, will Virginia go after the prior seller for personal property tax from 2024-2027?

You are taking a risk if you dont title. What if I sell you my racecar and you never title. I then goto MVA to get a new title, you know, I lost it. I have the title to 'your' car. How good is the bill of sale? Not a mess I want to deal with, maybe your lawyer is better than mine

I appreciate all the advice!

Last week I bought a 2012 Mustang GT from a private seller, and yesterday I took all the paperwork to the MVA to get it registered and titled. I agree that the convenience of being able to drive the car legally on the street is worth the cost. I paid $17,500 for the car, and taxes and title/registration fees were about $1,200. I was very pleasantly surprised that Hagerty will insure the car for $200 per year. Yes, per year! I have been paying them $1,700 per year to insure the Cayman. So, the costs of having it titled, registered, and insured aren't that bad.

Now I get to spend money on a brake upgrade, roll bar, harnesses, and way down that slippery slope!

The backstory . . .

I love the Cayman and took it to Summit Point for a track day this past July. It was wonderful! But I don't want to turn that car into a track car. Thus, I have had my eyes out for a cheaper track toy. I had thoughts about a Z06 Vette (insert joke about gold chains here) and said something about that to my wife about a month ago. For whatever reasons, she didn't like that idea, but she said I should look for a Mustang. She likes Mustangs. Since then I have been doing some research and figured an S197 GT would work. It would also be considerably cheaper than a Z06.

This past Sunday I was running errands and came across this car parked along Rt. 4, and it seemed just about right. Turns out the guy selling it is the original owner; he custom ordered it through Prince Frederick Ford when he retired. It has 86K miles on it and appears to be in excellent condition. The owner seems to be as OCD about cars as I am, and he showed me his maintenance log, the original window sticker, service records, etc. The only thing that concerns me is the presence of the faux brake calipers They are coming off the car this weekend!

Nice get Mark!

I was hoping it might be allowable for : https://www.scca.com/pages/club-spec-csm - build for a spec track class and autocross class and kill 2 birds/1 stone - but its too new.

Perhaps useful as a guide for your track build none the less?

Course, the other way is ditch the Cayman and get this Mustang instead: https://www.ford.com/performance/mustang-gtd/

Nice pickup!

I was reading about the spec rustang too, very tempting. Older cars though, no 5.0. As usual the HP is hard to pass up. Brakes, tires, oil and underwear. Or something like that, have fun

For a good spec class, try BMW spec E36 or E46. Well defined build guides. Fun. Good field sizes. Accepted by several organizations. NASA, BMWCCA, SCCA etc.
