3.2 engine chain tensioner cover hairline crack
I have a small hairline crack on the face of the chain tensioner cover. It is seeping oil with the car not running. is it worth trying to repair or better to replace? Crack is about 1 inch. Thanks. Tito

You could try JB weld.

Thats what I would do. Clean, then clean again. I've had it hold up in similar spots very well.

ok...best to remove the plate then put on the JB, or just do it in place? there is oil seeping from the crack.

I am a fan of patching things on the positive-pressure side whenever possible. No direct experience with this, though.

I like it on the outside. If it fails and chips off its in the chain housing it doesnt seem like the end of the world, but its in there. Plus, outside is simpler.

Best. Remove and take it to a GOOD welder.
Good. Remove, clean with flash solvent, grind the crack 1/2 the depth of the metal, clean again then blob on properly mixed JB weld. Go on in life impressed at JB weld for its holding forever or ticked that it fell off a year later. Standard, Wipe with a rag and blob on JB weld. Have it fall off later after one or two thermal cycles. Get more cardboard for the garage floor.....

Might be worth taking a dremel and grinding out the crack into a "V" shape, if only just a shallow one. This gives the glue a clean surface to adhere to, and also improves the likelihood of sealing the crack.
Also, you may want to drill a stop hole at the bottom of the crack, or it will continue to propagate.
