I think so too, an SC or midyear is still affordable. Prices start going back up with the 3.2 Carreras

Even nice SCs are getting a little crazy. I looked at a wreck of one that was 16k firm and the guy's phone was ringing off the hook. Would have cost easily 5k to get it back in full order. Meanwhile, people are asking mid 20s for clean ones. Seems pretty silly

Another interesting one to look at is the '74 S and Carrera. Was before some of the increased emissions stuff in '75 on and can be bought just as cheaply. The '74 Carrera specifically had some interesting carryover features from '73, and while extremely rare, have seen some clean local examples go for not crazy money

The thought of owning a 964 was what kept me motivated through college.

"'74 S and Carrera" Guys, out here (San Diego) these cars are as scarce as hen's teeth. In CA, '75 and older cars DO NOT have to be smogged. Those years are now highly sought after and their prices are rising like crazy. I've received a couple of crazy offers for my '83. The question I ask myself all the time is , "Why sell?" I'll probably be buried in that car.

Both '74 S and Carreras had some "interesting carryover features from 73. I especially like the transmissions. Most of them are 7:31 and they make for a quick box behind a 3.0

Not much to them otherwise in regards to them being an S. Clearly nothing in common with the 73 S. The US Carrera only offered flares to the body, front an rear sway bars, duck tail and sport seats, but really nothing in performance. Although, present day, they do have a following and prices have gone up based on the nomenclature and serial number.
Of course with the euro 74 Carrera, you got a real Carrera engine.. and of course those have skyrocket with the current run-up.

I briefly had euro Carrera Targa back in the late 80's.. like most of them it was rusty and I decided to sell it.. I knew I should have kept that engine!

I can see why they're sought after in CA.. However, most of the 74 and 75
911s I've run across in the Mid-Atlantic are usually very rusty.. like many of the earlier cars.. unless of course they've been kept out of the elements and well cared for.

Keeping an older thread alive...

Saw this article about the most recent auction trends and air"Kuld" 911s are still going up in price.

Arizona auctions show Porsche 911's rapid rise

http://www.foxsports.com/motor/story...id-rise-012315

Here's the last few paragraphs:

"Later-model 911s are starting to follow the "long hoods" up the value scale, with formerly cheap coupes and convertibles from the late-'70s, '80s and '90s getting due notice, notably the desirable performance models.

Klinger said "1980s 911S prices continue to go through the roof," pointing out the strong sales of several of the later cars at Bonhams, all of them achieving the top-dollar No. 1 values listed in the Hagerty Price Guide.

Some of the experts at the SCM seminar expressed concern that the rapid rise of 911 values might constitute a bubble that could burst with an unpleasant financial aftertaste. But given the dramatic upturn in today's collector-car marketplace, especially for European sports cars, Porsches seem to be right where they should be. And still moving up."

Evens solid mids are in the mid 20s now. The days of the affordable 911 are all but gone.
