Have they ever cancelled an event due to weather?

Not since I have been doing DEs 1996 due to weather. Did cancel the Glen one year but that was early in the planning as we would not have been able to use the real course.

one year it rained really bad on Saturday morning from a hurricane so the track was closed. The associated wind dried the track and after lunch they combined run sessions so nobody lost anytime.
Another time, you could stand in the paddock and see clear sky on one side of the track and over turn 1 was wispy clouds from the very edge of a hurricane.

You are worried about cancelling an event because of rain?

Rain (Tropical Storm Ex Hurricane currently devastating family in Texas and Louisiana) is fun for a very little amount of time. Less fun without rain tires. Way less fun where the beautiful runoff acreage at VIR acts like a luge to the barriers miles away. For my only visit to VIR this year I'm not happy it will be all rain. Just being a whiny little beotch...
Going to be there, Bob?

Sadly, no. Barring standing water resulting in hydroplaning, rain driving with just quality street tires is awesome. I honestly may prefer it to dry sessions. Figuring out the optimal rain line is awesome. Basic rules of thumb are to avoid painted surfaces. Avoid the normal line. Square off corners. Avoid outside edge of track. And the most important of all, don't be a hero on the out lap!
I wish I could be there to demonstrate, but here is some old school 911 fun on a nicely lubed track. https://youtu.be/MRDunF07Le4 And some 996 fun from this Spring. https://youtu.be/LJzXUoHrp6U
