The next US eclipse in April 2024 looks to be very problematic weatherwise.

The Atacama desert would be an exceptional place to observe any celestial event (very high/dry/clear) - but solar eclipse totality will not be visible from there (or from Easter Island). Also, per the NASA map each of the the totality durations in 2019 and 2020 will only be about 2 minutes in Chile. Worth seeing, but add other locations to the trip (many great options, PM for info).

The biggie is the US in 2045...if I'm not worm food by then! Closer to the earth than this one; will block out more of the sun, twice as wide of umbra path, and totality duration of 6 minutes! Something to shoot for!

If you're going for duration, Antarctica is supposed to be >10 minutes! I'm going from memory here, so I might be misinformed...

Um, I think that the maximum theoretically possible is 7.5 mins or so.

Only off by an order of magnitude (1 minute, 54 seconds)...

I'm going to wait for the South America eclipse with the longest duration during a 14,000 year period--7 minutes, 29 seconds. Just need medicine to improve a bit to make it until then: July 16, 2186.

That said, I did witness the longest totality in the 21st century, although our location in China (2009) didn't make it the full 6 minutes, 39 seconds (we got over 5-1/2 minutes, though). As one article I read mentioned, it doesn't matter how long totality really is, it always seems like only 9 seconds.

I think that was in Cosmopolitan Magazine and it wasn't about an eclipse

Excellent point - I don't know much about Chile's geography. Centerline of totality @ the coast is La Serena. Then SSE from there.

La Serena is an easy 4 hour drive north from Santiago by interstate. The climate there is excellent for astronomical purposes as evidenced by numerous professional observatories in the mountains to the east. I've observed twice from the region and hope to do so again for the eclipse. Spanish language abilities a plus, as few speak any English.

We're now within range to get airfare commitments for July 2019, so I'm pulling together a trip with my folks (my father and FIL are both astronomers). Is there enough interest to warrant a thread discussing travel, etc to the 2019 eclipse?

Here's a pic of my dad on his second eclipse trip right before I was born:

This eclipse seems a little less accessible than the 2017 one
