Fortunately There was no black undercoating, it was just dirt. I was able to clean it with oil eater, mixed with water (50/50), and a brush. Wipe off the rest with rags. I like the Ikea dish brushes $0.99 each.

The black undercoat removal worked for best with kerosine. Use it in a spay bottle, spray on, let soak in, and I used the same dish brush to brush off, spray again, repeat, until its all gone. I put always a plastic on the floor, and sprinkle some oil dry to soak up the Mess.

Here is a picture when I did it on the 70 991T

Cheers

Curious - do you do electrolytic rust removal or just media blast?

I just media blast the parts. Some time I use muriatic acid for small pieces, like bolts and nuts.

Cheers

This is exactly the direction I thought/hoped this thread would take. Love watching you take shit apart, clean it up, then reassemble.

The black stuff is more like paint, not undercoat. So I just left it alone.

Made some progress:

Drilled out the broken stud and installed a helicoil.

The engine harness is ready to go.

Cleaned, blasted, and powder coated some parts.

Cheers

Heater flaps are assembled and ready to go back in.

Rear suspension is ready to go back in.

T-bars and spring plates adjusted and installed.

A little bit picture fun.

Brake pieces going back on.

Parking brake installed.

I ended up removing the Oil tank, so I could get better access to clean up under the right side rear fender.

Here after cleaning. I also noticed the the rubber gromments for the tail light wire is hanging out, so I need to remove the tail light housings and fix that.

The Oil tank need also some cleaning and reconditioning.

Cheers
Engelbert

So I got the calipers and valve covers coated Indisch Rot.

I know, I know, it's original that way, but I like it that way. LOL

Adjusted the valve clearance, and installed the valve covers with new silicon gaskets.

Installing the cooling shroud.

It starting to look like something.

Happy Weekend
