The Michelin rep provided a detailed update last weekend at Tech Tactics East. Officially the Cup 2’s are ok to use down to 20f without any damage to the tire, below freezing they will loose performance. Again the recommendation was do not move the car until the tires are back up to temperature.

When pressed for information, unofficially in testing no damage to the tire until zero degrees Fahrenheit. Literally the discrepancy was attributed to the “dam lawyers”

The other interesting takeaway was the topic of heat cycles. Michelin believes the Cup2’s are good for 8-12 heat cycles. When asked to define a heat cycle Michelin considers a full track day one heat cycle.

Measuring tire temperatures at the track was briefly covered, bottom line the only way to collect accurate data is with a tire probe. Specifically mentioned a laser will not provide accurate data.

Track tire pressure was covered, a range was provided for ideal hot pressure (autocross 30-34) (HPDE 34-38)

The subject of tire storage was also discussed in detail. If stored off the car on rims the recommendation was to stack them flat like a stack of pancakes in a cold dark place, a walk in refrigerator was mentioned as ideal more than once.

One last item, later this year 2020, Michelin is coming out with a new Cup2 with a 240 rating. Expect many additional sizes and lots of “N” spec ratings.

There was a separate discussion about specific ratings of Michelin tires by vehicle, a 911 will have a different rating than a pepper, more to come...

That is called a 'factor of safety'. Pretty common for most anything that has life safety implications if it fails.
