my wife's e39 "no service" ZF went out at 100k miles and approx. 12 years of her gentle driving. Iwas going to service it at appropriate intervals but there was no way. Charlie and Omar sent me around the corner to get it rebuilt by their aamco friend for $2800 ....somehow she ended up with '12 528 4 banger.

Ford has done the same thing with the F150, no dip stick to check the fluid in the transmission, it's lifetime. Really wonder how long that will be with towing.

That's where I'm leaning. Since I'm new to the whole BMW thing, my real task right now is to decipher all of the damn acronyms for everything and understand what's needed and for reading OBDII/diagnostic/code info. You almost have to be some sort of EE with a background in automotive based embedded control systems to understand half of this stuff.

I think some of it is interesting. At least for my 92 325i, if you hit the gas pedal a certain number of times, at a certain rate, a light on the dash will "blink" to you in an undecipherable manner.. Then the on-board computer display below the radio can tell you all sorts of information.. how old the car is in days, how many km since last oil change, voltage, fuel flow in litres... Important things that Germans need to know.

Here's how it's done in an E90: http://e90.wetpaint.com/page/BC+hidd...us/revision/37

No trans temp though

Jazz,

The ZF's are very sensitive to correct fluid levels. The 99-01 996's also used the ZF box and had no dip stick. Check out the 996 forum on RennTech. A guy made his own fill tools to change the fluid. I think you also have to cycle the box thru the gears as well as careful check of the fluid temps.

I had Manassas Motorwerks flush mine a few years ago. It's probably due again. Clarke told me the procedure was to decouple the line from the trans cooler in the front. Stick one end of the hose in a new bucket of Trans fluid. Turn car on and shift into Neutral. Let the trans pump pull the new fluid in replacing the old.

They have a machine that does it, but that was essentially what he told me the process was.

Our M3 has "lifetime fluid" for its M-DCT double-clutch. Not happy about this. I checked with the 997 crowd on Rennlist and PDK fluid intervals are long,,,but Porsche DOES recommend changes eventually.

The transmission is sealed. Some owners have changed the fluid, but it's not easy. I hate extended warranties, but in this case I think I'll have to pop for one.

Really? That's even more disappointing. I get what demographic they're going for - BMW lives but the "buy a new BMW every 4/5 years" crowd, but man does it screw us over.
