Viton oil filter housing gasket
Recently noticed that Bavauto offers a Viton replacement for the notorious oil filter housing gasket. Anyone have experience with this aftermarket replacement? Seems like it would be an improvement over the OE part.

George,
I did Viton dual Vanos seals from Beisansystems.com for my M52TU several years ago and they have held up well. No recurrence of buna rubber failure from the OEM seal setup. It was worth the $$ in that instance. I replaced my OFHG on E39 with BMW piece several years ago and have not had a leak. Did pulleys, tensioners and belts this past weekend and inspected in and around OFH and did not see any leaks so OEM $2 cheapie seems to be holding up. Have read on E39 forums where some are installing OFHG and also adding sealant (correct for temperature / fluid). Not sure this is necessary. Also, check "freeze plugs" on OFH when you are in there to see of they need to be re-seated / sealed. Here is a LINK from CN90 (Cam) from BimmerFest on the repair. |
