Brake Caliper rebuild
Have never actually had a requirement to rebuild calipers, but decided to take that step recently on my sc300 which was having some rough braking and had been sitting for a while before i bought it. Also wanted to paint the calipers as i couldn't stand to look in the wheel wells and see the rusty caliper.
So bought caliper kits from rock auto and went about removing the calipers, rotors and caliper mounting. Had the rotors turned. removed the rust as best as possible from the calipers and mounts and painted them with some black caliper paint i bought locally. Also ended up painting the rotors. I didn't get all the rust which in time may lead to rust bleeding through, but as this was the first time, wanted to see how it will hold up. Spent some time cleaning all the stuff off of the pistons, which had some pitting, but will hopefully seal as most of it was right at the top...but we shall see what happens I struggled a bit initially getting the dust boot into its groove and then putting on a wire which helps keep it in place. I found that if you put the boot onto the end of the piston, then seat the piston all the way, there is just enough room to get the boot to seat into the caliper and the wire to seat. In the end the effort was well worth it and as most of my cars are at an age where the calipers have been there for a while will gradually make my way through all of them as they need to have the brakes redone. while a set of calipers isn't all that expensive, 10 bucks for two rebuild kits vs 150 bucks for a pair of calipers is well worth time learning how to do this yourself. a few pictures below of the caliper before and after and as i put in one of the pistons.
