Default Fun Run planning help please.

Folks:

There is a big 928 event every September based out of the Holiday Inn Dulles. I have been volunteered to plan, oversee and conduct the fun run.

We have been using this route: https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?m...RR&usp=sharing

It is a damn good one with Snickersville to Lime Kiln, a mid-route meetup in a church parking lot in Upperville and jaunt past Mount Weather. The only drawback is that we are coming up on using it unaltered for five or six years in a row. Squirrels are now waving at us with their grandkids.

For once in my life I am trying to get ahead of the curve in planning something. If any of you are so inclined to look at the existing route and make some suggestions or have thoughts or inspiration, useful or otherwise, I would really appreciate your input.

Thanks in advance.

I don't have any specific roads to suggest, but what about venturing up towards Harpers Ferry and Summit Point. There's a bunch of fun roads around there, and driving a bunch of 928's through Harper's Ferry would definitely get a lot of attention.

Sadly White's Ferry no longer runs, because that was a fun thing to do.

I believe you're talking about 928 Frenzy!? Reach out to Glenn & Larry with the Potomac Drive & Dine program for ideas too. driveanddine@pcapotomac.org

have fun and drive safe.

While I enjoy driving around Loudoun county, one of the drawbacks is starting down a paved country lane and soon after its turned to gravel or dirt. Not sure what apps out there help minimize from a planning perspective, but be sure to follow up with an actual drive through before committing to new roads.

Might also consider asking folks who plan the PCA Rally events for suggestions as well.

Thanks for the help everyone.

I am going to do some recon and drive potential routes to check for potholes, washboard, gravel etc. There are worse things to do with a day off..

I use motorcycle roads to find new routes. https://www.motorcycleroads.com/moto...es-in/virginia

However, there are several roads around Marshall, Hume, and Orleans I drive most weekends that aren’t on there. Also some roads between Little Washington, Culpeper, and Warrenton that look interesting.

I live in Western Loudoun. Make sure you drive the routes on a Saturday at the same time you plan to do the fun run. Traffic out here is ridiculous. If you're willing to cross over on Route 9 into WV, I can give you a fun route that I've worked out on back roads that flows south of Route 9 on backroads, then circles up past Bavarian Inn and then through Harpers Ferry. Not sure if that's too far for the Frenzy attendees.

We have a max travel time of 2.5 hours to do a round trip from the Holiday Inn Dulles in Sterling. Mt. Weather is sort of the outer edge of the range.

That significantly limits the options due to how long it takes just to get in and out of that area. 3 or 4 hours would put you into some really great territory with awesome roads.

How about heading a little more toward Charlottesville and the general South/West direction? I recall finding some really great roads in that direction on my motorcycle several years ago. At least it would be a change of scenery.

Another option might be to use the backroads to roll through Lovettsville, then over to the Route 15 bridge (thereby avoiding the Route 15 snarl), or just up 287 into Brunswick and backroads from there along the river, and into Point of Rocks for an ice cream stop at the dairy bar. That place is pretty great and has lots of parking. Then, come back over whichever bridge you didn't use on the way there.

Otherwise, lots of great suggestions already made on here for resources. I'm sure you'll come up with a great route.

How about Rt 7 to Winchester, I-81 to Front Royal, I-66 to Chantilly?
