Default BMW Trans Rebuild/Reman Source

First let me apologize for the non-P car content. I’m posting this for a friend. His son has a 318si (1.8L) 5 speed that has blown the first gear synchronizer. Does anyone have a source for a qualified rebuild or good used trans? He lives in Northern Virginia.
Thanks, Rich

Rich:

If it is a E46 (current) then BMW sends back to Getrag/ZF for a reman. Don't even sell transmision parts in the US b/c of liability or some BS. If it is an E36 (last version) there are some that rebuild but again, most get sent to Getrag/ZF for a rebuild. If it is an E30 ('84-'91) is again a Getrag but there are local shops that will rebuild. One independent BMW repair shop that I trust is Kesterman Foreign Car Service in Alexandria.

Here is a list of Independent bmw service professionals in our state:

VIRGINIA

Alexandria Bavarian Service, Grant Randall, 416 E. Raymond Ave, Alexandria, VA 22301, (703) 836-2002, bavariantii@verizon.net

Foreign Car Service, Fritz Kestermann, 501 Bashford LN, Alexandria, VA 22314, (703) 549-4100, kestermann@aol.com

German Swedish Auto, Robert A. Drye, 7890A Backlick Rd, Springfield VA 22150, (703) 550-6987, bob@germanswedishauto.com

Waterloo Motors, Inc., www.waterloomotors.com, Greg Smith, 317 E Shirley Ave, Warrenton VA 21086, (540) 347-1334, waterloo@ctwisp.net

and a site listing their commitment to repair (factory $ tool investment, etc...) iaibmwsp.com

Here is a link for an E30 3.18i tranny from a known good used recycler.

Good luck.

There is an independant shop off Four Mile Run in Arlington. I don't know the name, but it's right across from the Bike Trail and the building is painted up in the Orange, Blue and Purple of BMW's racing colors.

I haven't used them, so I can't vouch. They always have a bunch of cars for sale as well so they might have a tranny for you.
