With the assistance of a wonderful benefactor (you know who you are, but I won't out you - you can do that yourself if you want), the GF and I made a trip to Hotlanta for some time at the Porsche Experience Center. It was a pantload of fun, and the facility was great. The people were fantastic, and the food at the 356 was the perfect after-drive cocktail and lunch experience. If you get a chance, I highly recommend it.
The class I took was Mid vs. Rear Engine class and did a 991.2 911 S vs. 718 Boxter back to back. The kick plate is a lot more difficult in the Boxter, I thought, and as expected, the track was more fun and a bit quicker in the 911. Since I'm HTTP-disadvantaged, I'll just post up a little link to my gallery. Most of the pics were from the museum, but there are a few others in there. https://goo.gl/photos/ghhUaP8kR3uvBiWp9

I did the PEC during a planned long layover in Atlanta.
For those who haven't looked into it, the center is adjacent to the airport, so it is maybe a 15 minute taxi / uber ride -- very easy to get to/from the airport. You'll need a few hours (90 min on course + time to look around), but you can fit it into a morning. They have a few really interesting things to do: a skid pad, kick plate, slalom course, and a "low friction circuit" that is akin to a drift course, and, of course, the track itself. (There is also a small off-road course / hill climb). None of it is very long (the circuit is < 1 mile), but it has a bit of everything. I'll add that my instructor was very good, and he let me do basically a "choose your own adventure" among the various parts of the course. My only word of advice: if you're going to do the simulators, do them before getting in the car, not after. They pale in comparison to the real thing.

I don't think i will get there before the end of the year but I really want to see the boxster prototype. I have a model of that car that I got when I was 11. Pretty awesome and still one of my favorites. And yes, the mid engine cars are 5x harder on the kick plate than the 911s.

What is a "kick plate"?
Thanks |

Basically it is a plate built into the road surface that shifts ("kicks") the rear of the car left or right when you drive over it to mimic a skid / loss of traction.

Cool, didn't know such a thing existed. Looks like a fun exercise.
Thanks for explaining. |

I had the same question yesterday, but Google was my friend.

We have an office very near there; for some reason I have never checked it out. I really should. Thanks for the pictures!

Sure thing. If I ever have another excuse to go back to Atlanta, I'll probably try to hit it up again, if only for lunch at the 356.
