Those are some great shot }{, I'm sure there are but I have never heard of any east coast rally's, looks like the one is in Europe. And they really had a bug cup class? Those things are way more tricked out than what I had in mind. I love the one of the bug mid air almost cocked sideways.

Drag racing is pretty big with air-cooled VW's on an 1/8th mile track.

My friend has a 72 Super (All metal body) with a 2 liter motor that hits 85MPH by the time he reaches the end of the track.

Here a link for some videos.

Please don't kill the bug smacking some trees with it, post it on www.thesamba.com for about a grand so it can have a new home.

Pick up a copy of Hot VW's magazine for a ton of ideas on what to convert into. I say turn it into this:

Pinks had an episode with a turbocharged Bug that had a little mishap ... but was fast as all get out until it did. Would love to see it t-charged with a big stinger exhaust!

Only reason the "pinks" bug crashed is they made him take the wheely bar off. I think that anything that has ever been done with a car has been done with a Bug.

Dave, 85 mph trap speed on an 1/8th mile run is kinda quick for a street based drag car. I bet you would be able to stay awake.

drop a small subaru boxer motor or like a 928/924 motor in it.

boost it, strip te paint..go to johndeere or soemthing..get some flat/satin black in a can..spray that bitch. cut the body, drop it. and jsut beat the shit out of it.

scooby motors are EVERYwhere in junk yards..find a good ej20(2.016v) easy to pu tin and wir eup cos ty alike $650 for the motor..trans bolts up..you got a car that makes 150 n/ahp. that weighs 1300lbs and change..just run the headers...FUN

all the conversion stuff sounds to be of the level of effort and $$$$ that you would have spent to restore the S. fill up the tires and tow it to sell at bug-out on labor day or learn about engine mechanics by dropping the motor and get it running. what would you do with a dune buggy if it ended up as such?

sorry to be a stick-in-the-mud, but my projects take ffffooooorrrrreeeeevvvvveeeerrrrr and if i was in your situation, it would take time away that i don't have. (and $ too)

Am I the only one who would do a stock resto with removable mods (like carbs and exhaust). There was a time when a '73 bug was just another car, cool or not. Now most have rusted into oblivion. They are very easy to restore (ie good first project), most parts are cheap (you can buy a new dual-port engine for ~$1k complete, not rebuilt, new) and are as much fun to drive as anything. Ad in the sentimental value......

Besides, get it running and do a road resto, as long as the pan is solid and you don't care about the paint, drive it and enjoy. When you have the time, split the body from the pan and go nuts.
