Why/how did the pickup fail smog? Is there a new engine that was reported to CARB? If so, how dumb can you be?

I don't know it failed smog. That red emergency operations permit (in the rear window) is to allow the owner to drive it to get it inspected, etc. The owner told me this was the trucks first real outing once he got it running.

I do not think that truck needs to have a smog inspection. I could be wrong but '75 and older are smog exempt in CA.

Yeah, I know about the '75s and older. My 75 914 caused a big stir at the El Cajon DMV last year when I was adamant that it DID NOT need a smog for registration and the clerk was equally adamant that it did, right up to the point that he (the clerk) re-read the DMV's rules. Anyway, I've only seen the red sticker when a vehicle fails inspection. If the owner went to DMV to get the sticker, you would think he'd register it at that time. DMV is the source of those stickers, aren't they? I don't know. . . That's why I'm asking. Still, a very nice get-together!

Yes, the DMV (in CA) is the one that issues the red Emergency Operation sticker. It allows the owner to be able to legally drive the car on the streets to get the certifications/inspections/repairs completed. Once those are completed, the DMV will issue license plates.

". . .certifications/inspections/repairs completed." Ah. OK, got it. Thanks for the info. I hope to never have to go to DMV again (except for license renewal); I use AAA for everything else now. Much more genteel and easy.

I agree Don; I have AAA as well and really like doing DMV stuff through them.

The snorkel installed on my 3.2 always bugged me as it did not look like it belonged. I bought a stock 3.2 airbox and fabbed up a SS 3" pipe and 3 brackets to keep it all secure and installed it. Test drove it and then pulled it apart and had the parts powder coated. On Friday I put it back together and took the wife for a nice 70 mile ride through some local canyon roads. Glad to report it runs great and in my opinion, now looks like it should under the hood given it is a 3.2.
