And of course, how old/good is the battery? Not saying your aren't chasing a VR/Alternator issue, but if your batter is old/suspect then it brings the other items into question, no?

fwiw, my only recent battery issue was my 924. I killed the battery (lost an alternator belt). Thought I brought the battery back to life but still had issues with the battery not being able to start the car, despite a healthy alternator. Replaced 4 year old battery with new and all issues went away.

Unless the battery is dead hard shorted out the voltage will go up and down as the RPMs and regulator do their thing.

911 external voltage regulators are not failure prone all in all. They do fail and it is on the troubleshooting list but it not item one. 911 alternators and the related wire connections are prone to failure. They contain wear items and at some point in the normal life expectancy of a 911 the alternator will likely need to at least be rebuilt.

It takes but a few min to pull the fan housing and alt out for a visual and on to further testing as needed. This is a good time to take a good look at the top of the case, cylinders and oil cooler too. Mice nests, small unnoticed oil leak that is now a large oil soaked dust berg blocking 1/2 of the air flow through the cooler and the like. While you are in there you can also bust out the blow gun and get at the fuzzy frass.

Easy to remove but reinstalling the wires and duct in the back is like building a ship in a bottle.

You've done this a time or 2 Spend a few minutes and inspect the fan housing. And be careful with it, dont ask.

I just bought a remanufactured Bosh alternator from Advanced Auto. $200 and two year warrantee. A 25% off coupon popped up and applied that. Kind of hard to beat.
