Saving another one, this time a 1984 Carrera Targa
I picked up this 84 Targa without Engine and Transmission, earlier this year. Besides the engine and transmission, a few other parts are missing.
I started to disassembling the car, or what was left and inspect for rust and other damage. Here are some pictures of the Targa when I got it home. To be continued Engelbert

Here are some pictures from the disassembling process.
Looks like I need to make a new rear shelf. Got a small rust spot , I need to fix, where the dirt accumulated. Looks like this is an area that need attention on the impact bumper cars. The left door and the left rear panel must have had some pain at one time. The door is rusted at the bottom, but I got a good one to replace it. The rear panel must have being repaired at one point. We will find out later how good or bad it will be. A little dent at the left inner corner of the rear panel. The right side looks pretty nice. So I removed the rear Targa window. The rubber was like wood, and I had to cut piece by piece out, trying not to damage the trim. Here is what it looked like under the rubber. Just a bit surface rust, no holes. The windshield was removed the same way as the rear window. To be continued. Engelbert

Have not done a lot on the Targa. To many other things going on.
I fixed the small dent above the left tail light. Then I started to investigate what's going on under the cracks at the left rear quarter panel. There was quite a layer on Body filler. It looks like there was something in the way, and now I understand why the door was rusted at that area. This will need a bit of work, however, I'm still amazed that there is not a lot of rust at that area. Happy Weekend Engelbert

Looks like it's time for an update.
I didn't do much on the Targa during summer, since I was busy to set up my wood workshop in the basement. The room next to the car workshop, which was my wood shop, has now more car related equipment. Anyway, I made some progress on the 84 targa. Removed the front wire harness, so I can clean up the trunk area. Removed a lot of the old weather strip glue. Sorted out the wiring, marked them up and fixed a few connectors, etc. Here some pictures: Removed all suspension components. It looked to me as if this side was never disassembled and has still the original black sealer from the factory. More stuff to clean, blast and coat. The inside of the torsion bar tube looks pretty good. I cleaned up the steering rack, and it has no play and looks good to me as is. Ready for some Turbo tie rods. Started to fit the supports for the rotisserie. Front end done. Rear end done as well. It is balanced very nice and stays almost in every position. Cleaning time to get all the gunk out. Here the before. And after. Fixing some small rust areas. One spot where the pedal cluster was mounted need a patch. The car was sitting for a few years with the rear end jacked up, so any water that leaked into the car was collected at the pedal cluster area. The pedal cluster looked like it was at the bottom of the ocean for 100 years. Another section was where the battery was at home. I just cut out a piece put some paint in all the cleaned up areas. New piece to be welded in. On the outside same corner at the Bumper support was also some rust. Looks like this is an area where dirt collects and it's hard to see and clean. After the years it eats in to the metal. I remove part of it until I got good metal to weld in some pieces I made. The inside is also cleaned up and I put some primer on it. That's all for now. Cheers Engelbert

Wow! That poor car. Glad you are saving it. Did the owner say what happened to the engine and gearbox?
