Default Noisy Valve Train E46

I took my long suffering high mileage BMW out to get the inspection done today. There was a noticeable sound like a knock coming from the front of the engine. It was quite audible when cold (in the driveway) less so once the car was driven a bit. I thought it might be a bad pulley. The inspector said it sounded like it was more from the valve area. Other than replace the breather apparatus (which doesn't move) and the Valve Cover Gasket, I haven't really done any work on this since new. I haven't had any real time to diagnose or "internet diagnose". Anyone with experience have a starting point?

The VANOS on the E36 can start sounding like a rock tumbler when it goes. Given that it is in the front of the engine, that might be something.

Deflated, failed, or stuck lifter. The valve train in these cars are not very quite in the first place. Not a difficult job to replace the VANOS on these cars. I did this with an exchange unit works great.

Old school trick is to put the tip of a long screw driver on the suspect area and handle against your temple to locate noise. OR use the $4 HF stethoscope.....

I did a little googling last night. It does seem like the Vanos. It's also doesn't look too hard to fix.
