Thank you all for the recommendations! Fortunately for me, it turns out the whining was not a bad trans, but rather a bad idler pulley on the serpentine belt. This is what happens when you try to diagnose something while on crutches and only one usable foot.
 Both idlers have now been replaced and the whiny noise is gone (at least, when the passenger seat is unoccupied  ).
