Preparing for at least a top end rebuild this winter. Rather than sending the heads out to Ollies, is there a local alternative with lots of experience with air cooled Porsche's? Probably just need valves, guides, 3 angle fly cut and possibly resurface.

Had a leak down test done and Number 4 has a bad valve guide apparently.

out of curiosity...does it matter if it has air cooled experience...would seem to me what you are having done would be the same for any engine. I had my e30 head and e36 flywheel resurfaced at C&C machine shop in manassas with no known issues.

If I had to choose between a local shop with no porsche experience and a shop that just does air cooled Porsches but is mail order. I would not take the chance with the no experience shop. These are strange cars and peace of mind knowing it's done perfectly is important.

All things being equal I would, of course, go with the local shop which is why I am asking.

Air cooled engines have individual head per cylinder, each head is spun on the lathe using a special fixture for machining instead of the conventional milling on a multi-cylinder head. It is critical to machine each head to the exact same deck height otherwise the cam housing for each bank won't seat evenly on the three individual heads.

+1 on Billy. Did some head and case work for me on my type 4 rebuild earlier this year. I was happy with his service.

Bob @ anchor. He is not really local but worth the 2-3 hour drive. He met me outside philly so I didnt have to drive all the way to the shop. Pretty quick turn around. He rebuild my 993 heads to RSR spec. Also does ultra sonic cleaning.

Agree regarding Billy Ring at Performance Autoworks. They've moved out Leetown Road, no longer in Gasoline Alley. When I bent the valves on my Peter Dawe engine I couldn't see going back and forth to Dawe's shop so had Billy do the top end rebuild and it was smooth and strong--a great engine.

BTW, Billy is now also the guy to rebuild the SSM engines...if you go say hello to my Miata that's at his shop now!

I think (not positive, but believe it was out to the Summit Point area) that's where my 2.7 heads went for some custom work, Eric sent them out (and the rest of the engine) to the 4 corners of the US to his preferred guys.
